‘American Idol’: Teen channels Palisades heartbreak into powerful ‘Vampire’ audition that left judges in awe
Following Jamal Roberts' historic win, 'American Idol' is back for Season 24, and the excitement is at an all-time high. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the singing competition is currently holding audition rounds, welcoming unique voices from across America. But how do you stand out from thousands of performances? Just ask 16-year-old Ruby Rae, a student from California, whose powerful rendition of Olivia Rodrigo's 'Vampire' left judge Luke Bryan calling her a 'Definite Top 10er.'
From Pacific Palisades, California, she entered the audition room feeling both nervous and supported by her loved ones, "It feels incredible to have my family here because they definitely shaped me into the young woman I am today," Rae said. She also admitted the pressure of the moment overwhelmed her, "I've just been trying to think all the positive thoughts… but in fact, it’s all today… I don't know why I'm so nervous," as per Music Mahyem.
Wearing a bright yellow sweater and blue jeans, Rae delivered a standout cover of Rodrigo's hit song, showcasing her unique vocal tone and impressive control. She sang, "I used to think I was smart… Bleeding me dry like a damn vampire," instantly setting herself apart from the competition with a voice beyond her years. The judges were left momentarily speechless after Rae's audition, sharing a group hug before offering high praise. Lionel Richie said, "I'm so happy for us. I’m so happy for you. Wow, that was right on the money."
Bryan then declared Rae a true star, "If there were a thousand things on a list to check, I think you checked them all… I don't think we've seen a star, star, star like you yet." Grammy winner Carrie Underwood applauded her vocal control, saying, "Your breath control is quite amazing… I'm like, 'When is she going to breathe?" Rae said she auditioned out of love for performing and to uplift her hometown, sharing, "Performing is my favorite thing ever… We need a win after such a hard year. I'm here singing for my family, my community."
Fighting back tears, she then spoke about the wildfires that devastated Pacific Palisades, saying, "It's been a really hard time, seeing the town that I grew up in completely gone," and added that the tragedy taught her, "When everyone comes together, we can be so strong." Richie could not help but praise Rae's strength, telling her, "To have a bright spot like you come in to represent is fantastic," as per American Songwriter. After receiving three yeses from the judges, Rae shared, "I've learned that I can keep powering through and the light will keep on shining."
