'American Idol' Season 24 Top 5 revealed as two favorites are eliminated during intense Taylor Swift Night
Monday night’s episode of ‘American Idol’ Season 24 had a little bit of everything: big voices, risky song choices, and a tribute to one of pop’s biggest names, Taylor Swift. The April 27 live show turned into a double-theme night, bringing Swift’s catalog with songs tied to California artists, thanks to a collaboration with Visit California. There was also a fresh face at the judges’ desk. Comedian Nikki Glaser joined regulars Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie, offering feedback. Still, no matter what the panel had to say, the real control sat with viewers voting from home throughout the broadcast.
The night opened with Jordan McCullough stepping into Swift’s early years. He performed ‘Tim McGraw’, the song that introduced her to the world back in 2006. Chris Tungseth followed with ‘Exile’, originally performed by Swift and Bon Iver. Hannah Harper went in a completely different direction. She picked ‘Mean’ and brought out a banjo. Brooks Rosser stayed in that romantic lane with ‘Love Story’, pulling from the ‘Fearless’ era. Meanwhile, Daniel Stallworth shook things up by turning ‘Fearless’ into something closer to gospel, adding his own spin rather than sticking too closely to the original. Keyla Richardson kept things soft and heartfelt with ‘Lover’, while Braden Rumfelt closed out the first round with ‘Cardigan’, one of Swift’s more introspective tracks.
By the end of that first set, it was clear that everyone was trying to stand out, even if it meant taking a few risks. Round two pushed the contestants outside the Swift universe. Brooks returned with ‘She Will Be Loved’ by Maroon 5. Jordan slowed things down with ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ by Bonnie Raitt. Daniel switched gears again with ‘Best Part’ by H.E.R. and Daniel Caesar, even sitting at the piano for part of the performance. Braden kept the Maroon 5 streak going with ‘This Love’. Chris opted for something current, performing ‘What Was I Made For?’ by Billie Eilish. Hannah then delivered ‘That’s the Way Love Goes’ by Merle Haggard. Closing the night, Keyla took on ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ by Etta James.
With all performances done, host Ryan Seacrest stepped in to reveal the results. By the end of the episode, five contestants secured their spots moving forward: Keyla Richardson, Braden Rumfelt, Jordan McCullough, Hannah Harper, and Chris Tungseth. That meant the journey ended for Brooks Rosser and Daniel Stallworth. Looking ahead, the competition is about to get even more intense. The Top 5 will receive guidance from two familiar faces: Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. The next episode is set to air on May 4, and with the finish line getting closer, every performance will matter more than ever. At this point, it is anyone’s game.
