What happened to Aileen Wuornos? Sarah Paulson steps into the serial-killer role in first 'Monster' look
Emmy Award-winning actress Sarah Paulson was recently spotted outdoors in the streets of Los Angeles in character as serial killer Aileen Wuornos. This comes after her casting for the role on the Netflix anthology series 'Monster' had been officially confirmed. Paulson is set to appear as Wuornos in the upcoming fourth season of 'Monster' on Netflix, with an official release date yet to be announced. People magazine reported that Paulson was seen sporting red hair, a maroon robe, and grey sweatpants. She was also seen carrying a SusieCakes to-go bag, probably during a break in between takes.
The harrowing case of serial killer Wuornos captured the attention of the entire nation throughout the decade of the 1990s and early 200s. Wuornos was a sex worker from Florida who was convicted of killing six men along the Florida State Highways between 1989 and 1990. The authorities tried to pin a seventh murder on her, but were unable to do so since the victim's body wasn't discovered. Wuornos led a troubled childhood, and was born to young parents, Leo Pittman and Diane Wuornos, in a suburb near Detroit in 1956.
After being abandoned by her mother, Wuornos gave birth to a boy, one she gave away for adoption soon after, and entered the world of prostitution. Before her conviction as an infamous serial killer, Wuornos had been arrested several times on account of charges such as driving under the influence and disorderly conduct. Her trial attracted significant media attention and sparked a greater debate about the circumstances and the motivation of her crimes. In her confession, Wuornos had claimed that she had committed the murder in self-defence as all of the victims had either raped her or tried to rape her. She was sentenced to six death sentences and was finally executed by lethal injection on October 9, 2002, after being on death row for about a decade.
'Monster' on Netflix began as a popular series with its first season chronicling the life and crimes of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. The second season focused on Erik and Lyle Menendez, and the third season investigated the crimes of Ed Gein. The upcoming fourth season, as per Netflix, will shine a light on the terrible Lizzie Borden murders, in which Borden murdered both her parents with an axe in 1892 and was subsequently acquitted. Netflix or director Ryan Murphy have yet to reveal the extent of Paulson's role as Wuornos in the upcoming season. However, it can be speculated that she'll come to play a supporting role.
Speaking to Variety magazine, Paulson shared exclusive insights about her approach to preparing for the controversial character. The 51-year-old actress noted, "I'm coming on to do a particular thing that I can't talk about. But I'm always going to be interested in the why of human behavior." "If there's any opportunity for me to get inside something that has been predetermined by society and have a little look at it through my own particular lens, I'm always going to want to do that. Ryan knows that." The previous seasons and episodes of 'Monster' are available for streaming on Netflix.
