Marvel icon makes MCU movie debut in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ trailer and it's pure chaos
Frank Castle's The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) is one of the most iconic Marvel characters, with one perennial question: Will he ever suit up in an MCU film? 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' answered that with a fun, but explosive introduction in the recently released trailer on Wednesday. This will mark the second Defender's arrival in films after Matt Murdock/Daredevil's brief cameo in 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'.
The new footage introduces the tragic vigilante after he hits Peter Parker/Spider-Man with his truck, and shows no remorse. A hilarious interaction follows as Tom Holland's Parker angrily asks Castle why he hit him with the truck. "Quit your whimpering," Bernthal's anti-hero says, pulling out a gun and firing at Parker. The scene shifts to the web-slinger pulling Castle out of the van, and later shooting a web to his mouth to stop him from uttering an expletive. "Go home," he says as Castle's introduction draws to a close. This marks Bernthal's maiden film appearance since his last appearance in 'Daredevil: Born Again'.
At the time of writing, there is no clear indication of how Castle and Peter cross paths, except for their interaction. The Punisher may be operating on a different objective and using his quintessential violent methods to bring the criminals down. There is no doubt that the two will meet again at some point in the film. His willingness to run over the famed Avenger highlights Castle's kill-anyone-in-my-way' approach. As a backstory, Castle is driven by the death of his wife and two children, who were killed by the mob for witnessing a murder in New York City's Central Park. The Punisher declares a one-man war on all criminals. The action-packed trailer also features Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/The Hulk, who fails to recognize Parker after making the bold decision to erase everyone's memories to save the multiverse from being torn apart.
The official logline for 'Brand New Day' reads, "Four years have gone by since we last caught up with our friendly neighborhood hero. Peter Parker is no more, but Spider-Man is at the top of his game, keeping New York City safe. Things are going well for our anonymous hero until an unusual trail of crimes pulls him into a web of mystery larger than he’s ever faced before. To take on what’s ahead, Spider-Man not only needs to be at the top of his physical and mental game, but he must also be prepared to face the repercussions of his past!" Holland's web-slinger arrives in cinemas on July 31.
