Who returns in ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2? Major characters missing after exciting finale

The events of 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' Seasons 1 and 2 are separated by two years, during which the Great Spring Sickness took over Westeros.

With Peter Claffey's Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell's Prince Aegon 'Egg' Targaryen setting forth on the road as hedge knight and squire, 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' concluded its brief but memorable Season 1. Set against the backdrop of the Ashford Tourney, the 'Game of Thrones' prequel show's debut season established the narrative moorings that would be revisited later on. As is widely known, the HBO Max show has been renewed for a sophomore season, expected to arrive sometime in 2027, with a changed title. This naturally begs the question, which characters from the debut season will return for the second installment of the show? The article contains spoilers from the Season 1 finale.

While Season 1 of 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' was based on the novella 'The Hedge Knight' written by George R. R. Martin, the upcoming sophomore season will adapt the second novella from the same 'The Tales of Dunk and Egg' series, 'The Sworn Sword'. Thereafter, both Dunk and Egg will be seen in their usual habitat, embarking on yet another new adventure. In between the plots of Seasons 1 and 2, there's a narrative gap of almost two years. This gap will be of tremendous significance in shaping the characters' arcs in the new installment.

A retelling of the fates that befell the other characters in the intervening time period will be worthy of mention. After losing in the Trial of Seven, Prince Aerion Targaryen was sent into exile in Lys by his father, Prince Maekar, to gain maturity, and so may not be part of Season 2. Elsewhere, Prince Maekar was deeply affected by the accidental death of his brother, Prince Baelor Targaryen. Following the Trial of Seven, he returned to Summerhall and reflected on his past deeds, and hence may be absent from the next installment. Lyonel Baratheon's fate wasn't tragic by any means, and he went back home to become the Lord of Storm's End. Hence, his return to the sophomore season isn't expected. However, given the nature of the universe of Westeros, it wouldn't be surprising if he turns up somewhere along the way in future seasons after the second installment.

Tanselle, because of whom the Trial of Seven took place, fled to Dorne after being attacked by Aerion, without bearing witness to the contest. It was said that Dunk and Egg went away to search for her in between the events of the first and second seasons, but were unable to locate her, making her appearance in Season 2 unlikely. Elsewhere, Raymun Fossoway experienced intense friction with his family, as he sided with Dunk while his cousin stood by Aerion during the trial. He eventually founded the Green Apple Fossoways against the already-established Red Apple faction of his family, so it's uncertain whether he will be part of Season 2. Lastly, the novella details how both King's Landing and the entirety of Westeros were struck by the Great Spring Sickness soon after the departure of Dunk and Egg. Prince Baelor's sons, Valarr and Matarys, perished in the pestilence, seemingly making their appearance impossible. Season 1 of 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' is available to stream on HBO.
