Mel Brooks finally reveals official title and release date for classic space parody 'Spaceballs' sequel
At CinemaCon 2026's Amazon MGM Studios panel, Mel Brooks made an exciting announcement about the 'Spaceballs' sequel. A direct sequel to 1987's space opera parody film, the much-anticipated sequel was officially greenlit in June 2024. It will drop in theaters on April 23, 2027. In the original movie, Brooks' Yoda-esque character, Yogurt, tells Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his friends, "God willing, we'll all meet again in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money." The line was meant as a joke, but it started a running gag about the sequel's title. However, 39 years later, the legendary comedian finally revealed in a pre-taped video that the title of the next film is 'Spaceballs: The New One.' He goes on to explain that the film won't be called 'Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money' because he found the money in his "basement" and underscores the new title by adding, "It's just like the old one, but it's newer."
Additionally, footage from the upcoming film was also unveiled at CinemaCon, where Rick Moranis appeared as Dark Helmet. Moranis has been out of the limelight for decades, and the sequel will mark his return to the big screen for the first time in 30 years. The film’s footage was described by ScreenRant as follows: "We see space. The narrator describes it as dark, cold, and infinite. We see Dark Helmet’s helmet in the sand. We see a lightsaber-type battle. The narrator says Spaceballs 2 was a myth for years. We see flashes of the new film, including characters landing on the ground in superhero fashion, a portal that looks almost identical to the Doctor Strange portals in Avengers: Endgame. Rick Moranis is seen in the helmet, he stands at a urinal as a Na'vi comes to the urinal next to him. Moranis stares in shock."
Furthermore, the 'Star Wars' parody was co-written and directed by Brooks. The film depicts the evil Dark Helmet (Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks) attempting to steal the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia, but their evil plans are stopped by the Han Solo-esque hero Lone Starr (Pullman), his sidekick Barf (John Candy), and the Druish princess Vespa (Zuniga). Furthermore, the plot details for 'Spaceballs: The New One' are currently being kept under wraps.
Josh Greenbaum is taking over directing duties for the sequel, and the screenplay is by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Original cast members like Rick Moranis, George Wyner, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and Brooks are all set to return for the sequel. Moreover, Gad, Anthony Carrigan, and Keke Palmer are the newest additions to the sequel, with the latter playing a character named Destiny. In June 2025, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported that Pullman's son, Lewis, has also joined the cast as Starburst, the son of Queen Vespa (Zuniga) and Lone Starr (Bill Pullman). Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Jeb Brody are producing the film alongside Greenbaum, Brooks, and Gad.
