Medical dramas will be in the spotlight once they return with new seasons and new episodes. Since most of these dramas are inspired by real life incidents, it is expected that there might be episodes related to the pandemic that we are currently facing due to Covid-19. One such popular medical drama is ‘New Amsterdam’. Fans are eagerly waiting for the release of Season 3.

The series is based on the book ‘Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital’ by Eric Manheimer. It premiered in September 2018 on NBC. The series was created by David Schulner and stars Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher and Tyler Labine.

Where we left off

As reported by TV Guide, coincidentally, the show already had a pandemic in mind prior to Covid-19, but shelved the episode after people in the show's cast and crew — including recurring guest star Daniel Dae Kim — contracted the virus.

So, at the beginning of the Season 2 finale, Eggold explained that the scheduled episode titled 'Pandemic' was pulled off due to the uncanny resemblance to what was happening in reality and decided to air ‘Matter of Seconds’. But he did introduce Daniel Dae Kim as new trauma surgeon Dr. Cassian Shin. In the episode, as per readysteadcut.com, Helen (Agyeman) attends to cancer patient Lena (Pat Labez) and her husband and caregiver Oliver (Jojo Gonzalez), which made for a poignant subplot. There were hints of a probable romance between Shin and Helen as well. And Max (Eggold) decides to call things off with Alice (Alison Luff).

What we'd like to see

While it may get overwhelming for some people to watch what they are going through in real life, it is also important that a hint of reality is present in medical drama shows. So, we do expect them to have a pandemic plot. However, it would be interesting if more focus is given to the doctors, nurses and other health workers, and what they were going through during the emergency, which includes their mental state. Apart from that we would also like to see how Helen and Max’s equation is affected due to Shin’s arrival.

When is it returning?

In August, Deadline reported that NBC's fall 2020 lineup would not include new episodes, and the series is expected to premiere after January 1.
