Amazon’s ‘Masters of the Universe’ trailer finally reveals Jared Leto’s Skeletor and it's pure nightmare fuel
Jared Leto's first look as Skeletor in the latest 'Masters of the Universe' trailer is menacing. With perfect detailing from the cartoons of yesteryear, Eternia's antagonist is a near-perfect copy. The latest clip sees Leto's chilling and signature Skeletor cackle as he trash-talks He-Man/Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) during their blow-by-blow interaction. "You may have the power,” he tells the greatest warrior he's faced. "But you’re too scared to use it."
The newest trailer sees He-Man finally return to Eternia after spending a major part of his time on Earth. The aftermath of Skeletor's rise to power is shown after he battles He-Man's family to take control of the kingdom. While He-Man blames himself for Eternia's ruined condition in his absence, he is also tasked to finally reclaim his home. The footage ends with a tease of the showdown between him and Skeletor. 'Masters of the Universe' releases June 5.
Earlier, 'Masters of the Universe' director Travis Knight detailed how they brought Skeletor to life. "Skeletor was a really interesting villain,” the director told Empire when describing the original cartoon. "He looked cool. He was scary. He was funny. He was insecure. And then of course, he had this distinctive voice. I wanted someone to craft their own version of that." He further added that it was Leto who approached him for the role. "Ultimately, we landed on something that I’m really happy with. Skeletor is kind of the embodiment of toxic masculinity. Knight also quashed all hopes of seeing Leto's face in the film. "F**k that s**t. Skeletor has a skull face. That’s just the way it is. It’s a living, talking, emoting skull, and that’s that."
The official logline reads, "After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam back to Eternia, where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor. To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe." Knight helms the film based on a screenplay by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and Dave Callaham. Nee co-wrote the story along with Adam Nee, Alex Litvak, and Michael Finch. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, Steve Tisch, and DeVon Franklin serve as the producers, while Ynon Kreiz, Bill Bannerman, and David Bloomfield round up the list of EPs. The film marks the franchise's third time on the big screen.
