'KPop Demon Hunters' 2 gets official greenlight from Netflix but fans have a long wait ahead
After months of fans tossing theories around online, wondering whether the story would continue or if the film was a one-and-done adventure, the answer is finally here. As per its social media announcement, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have officially revealed that ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ will return for a sequel. The creators are already preparing for the next musical monster showdown, but here’s the catch. Fans will have to wait a while. Though there has been no official confirmation about the release window, an initial report by Bloomberg suggested that the upcoming film is aiming for a 2029 release. While that seems far away now, animated projects often take years to complete. However, one big piece of news that should calm nervous fans is that the people behind the first movie aren’t going anywhere.
Directors and writers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will both return to guide the follow-up film. That continuity matters because the first movie had a very particular tone, as it included a mix of fantasy action, music, and heartfelt stories about friendship and identity. In fact, the sequel will also kick off a new partnership between the filmmakers and Netflix. Kang and Appelhans recently signed a multi-year agreement with the streamer, which means they’ll be creating animated projects for the platform for several years. Kang, who directed the original film, spoke openly about how much the reaction from the audience has meant to her.
She explained, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.” The film followed a trio of performers who appear to the public as pop idols, touring stages and performing songs that top charts. But once the stage lights dim and the fans head home, these singers switch into demon-hunting mode, protecting the world from creatures creeping in from darker dimensions. Details about the next story are still under wraps, and the creative team hasn’t shared much about the plot yet.
Still, Appelhans hinted that the duo is “excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve.” He added, “These characters are like family to us. Their world has become our second home.” Moreover, the sequel announcement arrives at an interesting time for the film. ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ is currently heading into awards season with nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards. The film is competing in the Best Animated Feature category, and one of its songs, ‘Golden’, has also earned a nomination for Best Original Song. That recognition gives the project even more momentum heading into the sequel’s development.
