‘9-1-1’ creator finally explains why Bobby Nash had to die ahead of Season 9 return: ‘I really felt...’
Throughout the previous seasons of '9-1-1' on ABC, characters in the first-responder drama have faced numerous adversities. While their trials and tribulations have made for good television for the audience, the show creators have had to fulfill a high benchmark of expectation surrounding the plot and character arcs. Owing to this reason, the abrupt death of Peter Krause's Bobby Nash on '9-1-1' season eight created quite a few shockwaves. Ahead of the show's midseason premiere, creator Tim Minear has finally revealed the real reason why Nash was bumped off by the show.
As recounted by ScreenRant, Nash went down in a desperate effort to rescue his fellow Station 118 member Howard Han, played by Kenneth Choi. The death was as haunting as it was surprising, and to date seems to cast a shadow over what was previously known as a fun show. There's no denying the fact that even after his death, Nash continues to influence his colleagues. Minear co-created the ABC drama in association with Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy and had previously remarked that Nash's death was devised keeping in mind the fact that the show's high-stakes climax scenes must be depicted as posing a real threat to the characters.
Minear sat down with The Washington Post for an exclusive interview ahead of the season nine mid-season premiere. During the course of his conversation, he attested to the fact that Nash's death was in keeping with financial and budgetary considerations. Minear noted, "I really felt creatively the show needed something to kind of shake it up, and the reason Bobby died was that, if I was going to do this, I wanted it to be a character that would affect all the characters’ stories."
The creator further added, "You’ll see this across the board on network shows, where they start culling the cast and culling the production and trying to make things more affordable so you can keep making the show. I have tons of regret about it. I still think it was the right move. But it’s been really wrenching for me." In retrospect, the decision to kill Nash on the ABC show falls in line with similar choices made by other ensemble cast shows, such as FBI. The latter even went to the extent of cancelling one of its other shows set in the same universe to pull the reins on its budget.
