'One Chicago' brings Fire, Med and PD together for three-hour crossover episode and we're absolutely in
For fans of the 'One Chicago' franchise, the new year is just getting started. As is customary with the triumvirate of shows that comprise the 'One Chicago' franchise: 'Chicago P.D., 'Chicago Med,' and 'Chicago Fire' will once again converge their respective storylines into a three-hour crossover event on March 4. The three shows set against the backdrop of the Windy City each have their own storylines and character arcs. However, as established by the two previous crossover events, an inciting incident with far-reaching consequences will bring the Gaffney doctors, the Intelligence Unit, and Firehouse 51 into close contact.
NBC has revealed the official plot synopsis for the three-part 'One Chicago' episode as follows: "Firehouse 51 is called to an airfield when a passenger jet suddenly goes silent mid-air, triggering a high-stakes emergency. Their discovery cracks open a bigger and deadlier mystery - one with consequences that could ripple far beyond the runway and put countless lives in jeopardy."
Variety confirmed that the broadcast order of the 'One Chicago' shows will be slightly altered to accommodate the narrative exigencies. NBC usually airs a new episode of 'Chicago Med' at 8 p.m. ET, followed by 'Chicago Fire' at 9 p.m. ET and 'Chicago P.D.' at 10 p.m. ET. The order would be shuffled with 'Chicago Fire' kicking off the crossover episode. This would be followed by 'Chicago Med' coming second and 'Chicago P.D.' finally closing the night. The three episodes will air consecutively. For those in the audience who missed the initial broadcast on NBC, the three episodes will be available to stream on Peacock the next day.
The 'One Chicago' crossovers depend upon the diligent world-building that has gone into several years of storytelling on all three of the NBC shows. Speaking with NBC Insider, 'Chicago Fire' producer Reza Tabrizi revealed the behind-the-scenes writing process that goes into making these crossovers possible, "We really like when we can have characters have storylines across the shows... The (One Chicago) writers' rooms are close to each other, and there are conversations going on all the time. As far as what’s happening with the characters and how we can engage the characters from other shows in each show. That’s been ongoing since the beginning... I think it’s kept the writers' rooms close. Even if the show runners have changed, the writers' rooms' communications have, if anything, gotten closer over the years."
'One Chicago' is produced by Universal Television in association with Dick Wolf's Wolf Entertainment. Wolf also serves as the executive producer of all three shows in association with Peter Jankowski. This will be the third time the 'One Chicago' franchise has had a crossover event, after one in January last year and once in 2019. 'Chicago Fire' is executive-produced by Matt Whitney, Andrea Newman, and Tabrizi. 'Chicago Med' has Stephen Hootstein and Allen MacDonald as the executive producers, and finally, 'Chicago P.D.' is executive produced by Jason Beghe, Chad Saxton, and Gavin Harris.
