‘Tehran’ gets promising renewal update as Season 3 returns to Apple TV+ after four-year hiatus
Apple TV+ has officially locked in the long-awaited return of ‘Tehran,’ ending years of uncertainty for fans of the geopolitical thriller. The Israeli spy series will debut its third season on January 9, as confirmed by Variety. Alongside the premiere announcement, the streamer has also confirmed that ‘Tehran’ has already been renewed for a fourth season, which is currently in production. The road to Season 3 has been unusually long. After Season 2 premiered in May 2022, plans for the next chapter were repeatedly pushed back amid real-world events.

The delays heightened anticipation and raised questions about the show’s future, making Apple TV+’s dual announcement of a premiere date and renewal especially significant. Season 3 once again centers on Niv Sultan’s Tamar Rabinyan, the series’ fiercely intelligent and emotionally complex protagonist. Tamar is a Mossad hacker-agent who initially infiltrated Tehran under a fabricated identity, only to find herself increasingly isolated as her loyalties and survival instincts collided. By the end of Season 2, Tamar had gone rogue, severing ties with her handlers and suffering devastating personal losses.
According to the official description, the new season picks up with Tamar at her lowest point yet. Stripped of institutional protection and haunted by the deaths of those closest to her, she must reinvent herself in order to stay alive. Season 3 explores Tamar’s attempt to regain Mossad’s trust. The upcoming season also expands the show’s ensemble with several notable additions. Hugh Laurie joins the cast as Eric Peterson, a South African nuclear inspector. Additional newcomers include Sasson Gabai, Phoenix Raei, and Bahar Pars. They join returning cast members Shaun Toub and Shila Ommi, who reprise their roles from previous seasons.
‘Tehran’ has earned praise for bringing high-stakes espionage with intimate character drama, grounding its suspense in the psychological toll of undercover work. Behind the scenes, the creative team remains largely intact. The series was created by Dana Eden, Moshe Zonder, and Maor Kohn, with writing duties handled by Tony Saint and Simon Allen. Daniel Syrkin returns as director, continuing his visual approach. Furthermore, ‘Tehran’ is produced as a joint effort between Apple TV+ and Israeli public broadcaster KAN 11, with a wide slate of executive producers representing Donna and Shula Productions, Paper Plane Productions, Paper Entertainment, and KAN 11.
The renewal for Season 4 suggests strong confidence from Apple TV+ in the series’ future, even after its extended absence. While no plot details for the fourth season have been revealed, production is already underway, indicating that the streamer is committed to maintaining momentum once Season 3 launches. Viewers eager to catch up or jump in for the first time can stream all episodes exclusively on Apple TV+. According to AL.com, the platform continues to offer a seven-day free trial, allowing new subscribers to explore ‘Tehran’ and its growing catalog of original series.
