Cannes embraced it, Neon acquired it — here's why 'Sirāt' could be the next US indie breakout
Certain films do not just release; they create a seismic artistic impact that leaves a lasting effect on the audience. 'Sirāt' is one such film. Not only has it gained recognition after winning the Jury Prize at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, but it has also earned global acclaim. Numerous Spanish TV series, including La Casa de Papel (Money Heist), Narcos, and Griselda, among others, have gained worldwide recognition. Now, it looks like it's Sirāt's turn to continue the hype. The drama is finally headed to U.S. theaters early next year, reflecting that a festival favorite will reach the mainstream audience. Neon, an influential indie distributor, released the trailer on Friday.
The theatrical release date is set for February 6, 2026. 'Sirāt' will be released primarily in New York and Los Angeles, with a broader rollout planned across the nation later. This has been done to strategically position the film for the award season and create buzz around one of the most talked-about Spanish films, now entering the U.S. However, it is not uncommon for a Cannes-recognized film to screen in the U.S. The movie premiered at the film festival on May 15 last year. It continued to gain momentum after being screened at the New York Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film, directed by Óliver Laxe, tells the story of a father (Sergi López) and his son, who attend a rave party in the mountains of Southern Morocco. The synopsis of the film reads, "A father (Sergi López) and his son arrive at a rave deep in the mountains of southern Morocco. They are searching for Mar—daughter and sister—who vanished months ago at one of these endless, sleepless parties. Surrounded by electronic music and a raw, unfamiliar sense of freedom, they hand out her photo again and again. Hope is fading, but they push through and follow a group of ravers heading to one last party in the desert. As they venture deeper into the burning wilderness, the journey forces them to confront their own limits," as per Deadline.
Furthermore, the movie became a surprise Oscar contender, shortlisted for five categories: Best International Feature (Spain), Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Music (Original Score), and Best Sound. Additionally, the sound team is the first all-female team to be shortlisted. Neon's trust in 'Sirāt' reaffirms it as one of the best films to be released this new year. The channel has built a reputation for bringing internationally acclaimed movies to the North American audience. Apart from 'Sirāt', Neon has also introduced award-winners like 'Parasite', 'Anatomy of a Fall', 'Titane', and 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire'.
'Sirāt' appears to be one of the most talked-about films of 2026, with its work transcending language and borders purely through its breathtaking visuals and storytelling. The cinematic journey of the father-son duo through sleepless raves in the desert and wilderness promises to create an impact on the mind of anyone watching.
