Spoilers for ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Season 2 finale, ‘Nouveau Theatre Des Vampires’

The tenth episode of season 2 of ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ brings back the terrible Vampiric Council that last made an appearance in season 1 episode 7, ‘The Trial’. Back in the season 1 episode, Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) were summoned by the council following the unfortunate sun-induced death of Baron Afanas.

Vampire-law (though there isn’t much) has one rule above all else: thou shalt not kill other vampires. While they managed to escape consequences, things happened afterward that the four vampires were not privy to. Their familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), a descendent of Van Helsing, and an expert vampire slayer himself managed to ward off dozens of vampires sent by the council to kill them. On his own time, while briefly entangled with a group of amateur vampire slayers, Guillermo managed to kill several more.

All that has now come back to haunt the four.

The season finale begins with the four discovering that Guillermo was gone. The familiar, having been discontent with his job profile and the fact that he could not reconcile the desire to become a vampire and his expertise at killing them, left and went back home. After struggling to exist without any help, the lazy vampires suddenly find distraction in the form of an invitation to the Nouveau Theatre Des Vampires, an exclusive vampire event that they have always wanted to attend.

As they make their way to the event, Guillermo returns to the manor to collect Toopher’s old minifridge after his refrigerator at home broke down. Once there, he sees the invite and notices that it had the Vampiric Council logo on it. Realizing it was a trap, Guillermo rushes to the location.

At the event, meanwhile, Vladislav, played by showrunner Jermaine Clement (who also played the same role in the original ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ film) captures the four, and in front of a guest of hundreds of vampires, demonstrates through theatrics how they had slain the many vampires (that Guillermo had killed).

When the time comes to kill them, Guillermo suddenly makes an appearance and proceeds to kill everyone there. With a combination of holy water, stakes, and other weapons at his disposal, Guillermo effectively kills hundreds of vampires in one go.

When he is done, Nandor asks him if he wanted to tell them all something. And that is where the show ends. ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ left many questions unanswered in this season finale. For example, did Guillermo manage to kill Vladislav, or did he escape? Another question that we don’t know the answer to, and this is crucial to the plot, is will the four vampires be willing to accept Guillermo as a familiar now that they have seen what he’s capable of?

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Season 3 will hopefully address all of this.
