Marvel Studios taps a familiar 'Spider-Man' foe as Wonder Man's villain
Slated to premiere on Tuesday, January 27, the mystery surrounding Wonder Man's main villain has finally been unveiled. Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the action-packed superhero series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, better known as Wonder Man. While there had been much speculation about the antagonist of the show, Marvel Studios has now revealed exactly which menacing villain our superhero will face.
Marvel Studios has confirmed that the MCU's Department of Damage Control Agent P. Cleary (Arian Moayed) will serve as the main villain in the 'Wonder Man' series, as per The Direct. Notably, Moayed will make his third MCU appearance in 'Wonder Man' as Agent Cleary, after first appearing in 2021's 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' and reprising the role in 2022's 'Ms Marvel,' where he teamed up with Alysia Reiner's Agent Sadie Deever to pursue Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan.
'Wonder Man' executive producer and showrunner Guest told SFX Magazine that Marvel aimed to avoid giving fans any "homework" to enjoy the show. "One of the things we wanted to do was have no homework for the audience. Being able to watch a show where you don't need to have seen the last Marvel movie, or any Marvel movie, to enjoy this series. We were like, 'How do we tell this story about these two characters where the special effects are the performances?' Our locations and getting to shoot in Hollywood is us really using this world around us to make it feel real," Guest explained.
The Department of Damage Control, introduced in 2017's 'Spider-Man: Homecoming', will also return in 'Wonder Man', making it their first MCU appearance since 2022's 'She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.' Talking about the first 'Wonder Man' trailer, released in October 2025, the teaser took an offbeat approach, focusing on Williams and Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) trying to land the role of 'Wonder Man', with no superpowers shown. Notably, in the comics, 'Wonder Man' is an extremely powerful, nearly invincible superhero made of ionic energy, allowing him to survive even disintegration, making him virtually unstoppable.
The final trailer, released in January ahead of the premiere, revisits similar scenes but offers a brief glimpse of Williams' powers and features a Damage Control agent warning that he is a major threat, as per TVGuide. Marvel's social media teasers have teased key moments, including a clip showing Williams' brother Eric (Demetrius Grosse) angrily declaring, "Simon has no interest in helping this family." The plotline of the much-anticipated show follows aspiring actor Williams, who meets Slattery, a once-famous actor, and together they pursue roles in the remake of the superhero film 'Wonder Man', giving audiences a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood and the struggles of actors at opposite ends of their careers.
