Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock return in 'Practical Magic 2' after decades, with a mysterious new chapter
The Owens sisters are finally back with their witchy antics. The teaser of the highly anticipated 'Practical Magic 2' is out, and it seems as if no time has passed at all. The sequel to the beloved three-decade-old original will release worldwide on September 11. The teaser focuses on the main duo of Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman). Both actresses reprise their roles from the original movie. Sally is captured working in her beloved garden, while Gillian is seen cooking up some spells in the greenhouse. In the teaser, a new character played by Lee Pace meets the sisters for the first time.
The teaser kickstarts with Sally's voiceover. “I’m sure you’ve heard of the Owens family — the ones from Massachusetts, the ones their neighbors whisper are witches,” she narrates. During the voiceover, viewers get a glimpse of new characters played by Joey King and Maisie Williams. Both of them are swept into a hug by the Owens sisters in one frame. Deadline reports that they will play Sally's daughter in the movie. The teaser then shows a meeting between Pace's character and the sisters, in which Sally tells him, “Everyone we love dies.” Gillian adds, “A really horrible death…It’s not great for the Tinder bio.”
In a throwback to the 1998 classic's popular 'Midnight Margaritas' scene, the teaser uses Harry Nilsson's 'Coconut Song' to highlight the new generation of the Owens family and the curse that threatens the family. There are also several visual callbacks, like a spoon magically stirring in a coffee cup. The teaser ends with a scene featuring Pace's character and the Owens sisters on a train, where Gillian tries to calm the mood by saying, “Everything’s going to be okay.” This is followed by a query from Sally, who asks, “Everything’s going to be okay? Just like it was when we had to bury a corpse under a rose bush? That kind of fine, or different?"
The sequel will be directed by Susanne Bier ('The Perfect Couple', 'Bird Box'), who takes over the reins from Griffin Dunne, according to Variety. The synopsis suggests that the sequel, “returns to a world steeped in moonlit mischief and powerful ancestral magic, as the Owens sisters must confront the dark curse that threatens to unravel their family once and for all in a must-see cinematic event of fun, magic, and mayhem.” Akiva Goldsman and Georgia Pritchett penned the script, which is based on the 2021 novel 'The Book of Magic' by Alice Hoffman, the fourth installment in the author's adored 'Practical Magic' series. Acclaimed producer Denise DiNovi joined hands with the actresses to produce the feature. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest also reprise their roles as Frances and Jet Owens, Sally and Gilly’s aunts, from the original.
