CinemaCon 2026 just revealed ‘The Social Network’ sequel and its plot sounds way more dangerous
Sony Pictures teased an exclusive trailer for their upcoming film ‘The Social Reckoning’ at CinemaCon 2026. Fans must remember 2010’s ‘The Social Network’ starring Jesse Eisenberg in the lead along with Andrew Garfield, Aaron Sorkin, Justin Timberlake, and more. The annual convention witnessed an exclusive first look at Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming ‘The Social Reckoning.’ It featured cast members including Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Bill Burr, and Jeremy Strong. Sony Pictures’ executive Sanford Panitch introduced the filmmaker Sorkin and referred to the sequel as a “thriller.” The storyline revolves around events that took place two decades after Zuckerberg invented Facebook, the world’s biggest social media platform.
The events that follow feature Frances Haugen (played by Mikey Madison) and Jeff Horwitz (played by Jeremy Allen White), where the latter is associated with his whistle-blowing journey. He was on the path to expose some of the well-kept secrets of the platform. Sorkin spoke more about the storyline, stating, “There isn’t a life that Facebook’s algorithm hasn’t touched, and that influence has shaped everything. So it’s time to say more.”
The audience present at the CinemaCon also witnessed an exclusive trailer. Further, Haugen exposes secrets to a Wall Street Journal reporter. She added that she intended to “help Facebook” and not “hurt” it. The next scene from the court features Jesse Eisenberg playing the lead role of Mark Zuckerberg. When he was asked to state his name, he referred to himself as a “professional defendant.” One of the advisors, played by Bill Burr, tells Zuckerberg, “These guys are counting on the next run of congressional testimony to make you likable.” In response, the CEO said, “I’m happy to lend a hand, but I think you don’t.”
Additionally, reports were stating how Facebook had an “unprecedented” impact on society. However, Zuckerberg responded that he was a “free speech absolutist” and that he was “not the one” who was lying. According to him, they were the persistence of misinformation on the platform. “I’m not the one who’s lying, and I’m not stopping them from seeing someone who is,” he added. Things turn even more dramatic when he announces, “People around here understand that when I say no, that’s the end of the debate. I’m not two years out of a dorm room anymore.”
Some of the supporting characters could be seen talking about the consequences of going against the platform. One character noted that having “the mafia” would be better as one’s enemy, rather than Facebook. Additional cast members include Betty Gilpin, Wunmi Mosaku, and Bill Burr. On the other hand, it is being produced by Peter Rice, Todd Black, Stuart Besser, Aaron Sorkin, along with Roger McNamee, Lauren Lohman, Broderick Johnson, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, and Andrew A. Kosovo. ‘The Social Reckoning’ is set to release on October 9, 2026, via Columbia Pictures.
