What is Cortosis Ore? The Acolyte's new helmet explained
Contains spoilers for 'The Acolyte'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'The Acolyte' Episode 5 premiered on June 25, 2024, on Disney+. The intriguing episode brought with it, the biggest reveal of the season so far as the identity of the masked Sith was revealed to be the man who we formerly knew as Qimir (Manny Jacinto).
The episode was packed with many action sequences that were choreographed brilliantly as we saw the Sith Lord dominate Jedi and kill them for fun. By the time the episode ended, only Master Sol (Lee-Jung Jae) and Mae (Amandla Stenberg) who now pretends to be her twin Osha survived apart from the Sith Lord.
A big reason behind the Sith Lord's survival was a war accessory that helped him counter the Jedi lightsabers. No matter how hard the Jedi tried, his helmet made of Cortosis metal helped him counter the Jedi effectively.
What is the Cortosis Ore helmet in 'Star Wars'?
Cortosis, in the 'Star Wars' universe is a metal that is used to counter lightsabers. As we see in 'The Acolyte', when the lightsabers are used against the helmet, they become dysfunctional for a few moments.
Cortosis is rare and fibrous and an effective defense against lightsabers but it only offers a temporary defense as the lightsabers short out only for a few seconds. Further, the metal is brittle and weak and if multiple strikes happen, it can break.
In 'Episode 5', Jecki Lon (Dafne Keen) who ultimately falls victim to the Sith Lord, is able to knock the helmet off with repeated strikes. She loses her life in the process but exposes Qimir and makes him prone to the attacks that follow.
The metal is used in many forms in the 'Star Wars' universe where both Jedi and Sith use weapons made out of Cortosis to counter the threat of the lightsabers.
Other materials like Beskar Beskar also called Mandalorian iron or Mandalorian steel, have also been used and have proven to be better than Cortosis in terms of their effectiveness against severe attacks and durability
What happens to the Sith Lord in 'The Acolyte' Episode 5?
'The Acolyte' Episode 5 ended with the Sith Lord, whose name is still unknown surviving the umber-moth attack and walking away. We also see him use force healing on Osha.
Earlier in the episode, he reveals that he has been looking for a pupil and he is let down by Mae who doesn't live up to his expectations. Osha could now be the pupil he is looking for.
He also says that he won't let anyone who has seen him survive, so now that Master Sol and Mae are alive, he will surely be coming for them.
