New 'Avengers: Doomsday' teaser may have just confirmed X-Men's deadliest villains are back

The first two 'Doomsday' teasers spotlighted Captain America and Thor, but the third goes darker, opening on a ruined Xavier Mansion

Things are moving at a rapid pace at Marvel, where the marketing and promotion for the upcoming landmark film 'Avengers: Doomsday' is in full swing. With the online release of the third teaser trailer, we now have a better understanding of what the X-Men might be up against in the near future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As is already known, the MCU has already dropped three teasers for 'Avengers: Doomsday'. While the first two teasers featured Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America and Chris Hemsworth as Thor, respectively, the third teaser revealed the eventual fate of the mutant superheroes.

The texture and tonality of the third teaser are remarkably darker in comparison to the earlier iterations. It all begins with scenes from a devastated Xavier Mansion as Ian McKellen's Magneto and Sir Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier are seen exchanging pieces of dialogue while engrossed in a game of chess. One such piece of dialogue hauntingly foreshadows catastrophic events, "Death comes for us all...it's all I know for sure...The question isn't, are you prepared to die? The question is: who would you be when you close your eyes?"

The teaser then quickly cuts to Scott Summers, played by the iconic James Marsden. Enthusiastic fans of the X-Men will have no reason to complain as Marsden is seen in the comic-accurate Cyclops costume in blue and yellow. By the time we catch up with him, Cyclops is on his knees and unleashes a furious optic blast that fills up the screen. Although it may initially come across as a show of strength from the mutant superhero, the optic blast might also herald a desperate last-ditch attempt to overwhelm his adversaries. Another thing that catches fans' attention is the robotic feet manoeuvring against the scorching background. The glimpse hits that it's none other than the mutant-hunting Sentinels, and this time they seem to be scarier in demeanour, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter

The Sentinels were created by Bolivar Trask in the original comics series and appeared in the 2014 film 'Days of Future Past'. Nevertheless, their most recent version is indicative of a larger war playing out all across Earth 616, one in which Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom might come to play a determining role. All in all, it does seem like the teaser visits the X-Men while they're in dire straits. This speculation is further fuelled by the fact that, other than Cyclops, no other mutant shows up in the trailer. This has led many fans to speculate that Cyclops could be the last man standing.

Speaking in an interview with Vanity Fair back in August 2025, Marsden opened up about his return to the MCU when he remarked, "I was excited because you're a part of something gigantic. I've spent 20 years listening to people say, 'When are you coming back? When are you coming back? Are you coming back?' I'm dead. Well, maybe not. I'm going to have a tough time struggling to get into costume if they waited a couple more years. So it's been a blast. It really has." 'Avengers: Doomsday' arrives in theatres on December 18.
