'The Pitt' Season 2 sees return of Dr. Abbot in an unexpected twist and it absolutely delivers
'The Pitt,' the award-winning series, debuted on January 9, 2025, and returned for another smashing season last month. This week, the show's second season reached its halfway point with episode 7, titled 1:00 P.M., which aired on February 19. Co-written by Kristen Pierre-Geyfman and R. Scott Gemmill, the episode is directed by Uta Briesewitz. In addition to delivering another instalment full of adrenaline-pumping drama, the episode stood out to fans for the return of the fan-favourite character, Dr. Jack Abbot, played by Shawn Hatosy, for the first time in Season 2. However, he was wearing a different uniform.
Dr. Abbot's absence so far this season is explained by his serving as the attending physician on the night shift, while the season is currently covering the day shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. But what caught fans' attention was that Abbot was dressed in a police uniform, rather than his usual medical scrubs. It turns out that he moonlights as a medic for the Pittsburgh Police Department's SWAT Team after finishing his shift at the hospital. In episode 7, Abbot arrives at PTMC after one of his comrades, Hiro, gets shot in the neck by a 'high-velocity' bullet during a warehouse raid. Robby allows Abbott to scrub in and intubate Hiro, and Abbot stays until his friend is stabilized.
Moreover, Abbot was also hit during the raid, but the bulletproof vest saved his life. He sustains a minor wound on his back, which Dr. Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) treats. In return, he offers to deliver diabetes supplies to Mohan's patient, Oscar, who left the hospital to avoid paying the bills. It's not surprising to see Abbott step up during a crisis, as he was a former combat medic who did the same during the mass shooting at Pitt Fest in Season 1, proving that he can stay calm under pressure.
Shawn Hatosy's turn as Dr. Abbot has been a highlight of the series, especially his friendship with Dr. Robby Robinavitch (played by Wyle). He also won the Emmy award for 'Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series' in September 2025. His co-star Katherine LaNasa, who plays the day-shift charge nurse Dana Evans, won the award for 'Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series' and Wyle for 'Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series,' tallying a total of 3 wins in the acting category alone.
Watch the latest episodes of 'The Pitt' Season 2 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
