‘High Potential’ Season 2 brings back a fan-favorite in a tense investigation with Daphne and Morgan
'High Potential' returned with another explosive episode 14 titled, 'If You Come For the Queen' on Tuesday on ABC. The show's latest episode is directed by Anu Valia and co-written by Rebecca Kirsch and Nicole French. This week finally answers the long-standing question of who kidnapped Morgan's boyfriend, Roman, decades ago.
Selena, head of the Major Crimes Division, discovers that Eric Hayworth, a military veteran, abducted Roman at the orders of a woman named Willa Quinn. However, the episode doesn't delve into Roman's whereabouts; instead, it focuses on a recurring character: LAPD Sergeant Dottie Reynolds.
It also showcases Daphne's growth as she leads her first major case. The episode pairs Morgan with Daphne together for the first time, leaving Morgan's longtime partner and love interest, Karadec, to work with Özdil (Daphne's partner) on a different case.
At the start of the episode, Dottie (Michael Hyatt) is attacked while getting a massage at her regular spa. She was Morgan's instructor at the training academy and is her mentor, so naturally, Morgan wants to help find the culprit.
Moreover, it’s revealed that Dottie worked together with Daphne for five years before they had a falling out. As such, Selena lets Daphne lead the investigation, with Morgan as her partner, to find out who wanted to harm Dottie and why. Meanwhile, Karadec and Özdil investigate the murder of Luke Knight on the other side of town. Morgan's high IQ leads her to discover that Luke went to the same spa as Dottie, prompting both teams to explore any possible connection between the two cases.
It doesn't take them long to find that Luke's boss, Phyllis, had an axe to grind with Dottie, as both women were in the same sorority in college. However, Phyllis was arrested on felony charges after Dottie reported her for hazing. As a black woman, she wasn't given another chance to redeem herself, and the small incident ended up ruining Phyllis' future.
Moreover, the teams learn that Luke worked as a personal trainer and stole a high-profile client from his rival, Voz, who vows to take revenge. So, Voz and Phyllis decided to pull off a 'Strangers on a Train'-style murder in which two people kill each other's enemies to avoid coming under suspicion.
Voz tried to kill Dottie, but failed, and Phyllis succeeded in killing Luke. The Major Crimes team apprehends Phyllis, who surrenders after Daphne convinces her to face the consequences of her actions.
By the end of episode 14, Dottie and Daphne also resolve their differences. Their five-year friendship ended after Dottie encouraged Daphne to take the sergeant's exam and advance in her career. However, Daphne had seen how Selena and other women of color were routinely passed up for promotions, so she refused to try, which led to a huge argument.
But after Daphne guides Ava (Morgan's daughter) through a similar situation, she starts to reconsider her own decision. Ava scores admission to her dream design class but refuses to join after her classmate claims she only got in because of her race. A disheartened Ava confides in Daphne, who recalls Dottie's advice and encourages Ava to ignore others' criticism and follow what feels right to her.
