What does the blue ribbon symbolize?

On Sunday night, the ribbon, seen on many lapels, had a special significance. According to reports, the accessory signifies support for refugees and others who have been displaced all over the world. They were created by the UN Refugee Agency Coalition, with “#WithRefugees” being one of their slogans.  Each ribbon is made by hand by Knotty Tie Co., a clothing company located in the United States that helps refugees relocate in Denver, Colorado.

In a recent press release given by the company, it said "The wearing of the blue #WithRefugees ribbon on the red carpet sends a powerful visual message that everyone has the right to seek safety – whoever, wherever, whenever they are."

Over the award season, big personalities have joined the global movement, including Cate Blanchett, a nominee for Best Actress. "What I love about film is the way it draws us into compelling human themes to uncover the connective tissue that binds us all," she wrote in a statement to the press. "Whenever I have met refugees — in places such as Lebanon, Jordan or Bangladesh, in the UK, or back home in Australia — what has struck me has not been their 'otherness' but how many things we share in common." Several actors, including Dolly De Leon from 'Triangle of Sadness', have also shown her support from the film industry. "At a time when there are so many people suffering in the world, showing a little kindness and compassion to our fellow humans should not be a big ask," she said.
