The winners of the 2022 Writers Guild of America Awards were announced on Sunday, March 20, as they honored the best of Film and TV for 2022. Adam Mckay’s apocalyptic black-comedy ‘Don’t Look Up’ won the top prize at this year’s event and made the race to the Oscars even more interesting.

The Netflix movie edged past movies such as ‘Being The Ricardos’, ‘King Richard’, ‘Licorice Pizza’, and ‘The French Dispatch of the Liberty Kansas Evening Sun’ to win the award. The win came as a surprise to many as they predicted ‘King Richard’ or ‘Licorice Pizza’ to take home the trophy.

Meanwhile, ‘CODA’ added one more trophy to its haul by winning the Adapted Screenplay accolade at this year’s Writers Guild Awards. The Apple TV+ movie continues to gather momentum and is undoubtedly one of the frontrunners for Oscar’s top prize of Best Picture. It also won in the top categories at the Producers’ Guild Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards as well.

The win seems to have confirmed that the battle for the Best Picture accolade will be between ‘CODA’ and ‘The Power of the Dog’.

Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Belfast’ was not eligible for this year’s ceremony and did not find a place in the Original Screenplay category. On the other hand, Jane Campion’s ‘The Power of the Dog’ and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Lost Daughter’ were also ineligible and were not nominated for the Adapted Screenplay trophy. All aforementioned are nominated at this year’s Oscars.

On the television side, HBO’s ‘Succession’ and HBO Max’s ‘Hacks’ took home trophies in two categories each. The HBO Max series beat last year’s winner ‘Ted Lasso’ to win the Comedy Series accolade while ‘Succession’ won the trophy in the Drama series category.

The show also paid tribute to the late actor Bob Saget and showed footage of the late comedian attending a previous WGA ceremony.
