What is ‘Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies and the Internet’ all about?
The six-part anthology docuseries is going to tell stories about the various types of rampant cyber-crimes today all across the globe. It would also open up about the victimized users globally who fall into this dangerous trap that is hugely filled with cyber criminals fooling people through digital deception and modern misinformation as well. This all deeply has an adverse effect and impact on those people’s lives as well.
The trailer shows how a huge number of virtual-based cyber-crimes are done through the internet. Episodes describe the stories that have been researched by makers for years which cover blackmail, white supremacy, and murder.
The official synopsis reads, “Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies and the Internet is a 6-part anthology series from director Brian Knappenberger, Luminant Media and Imagine Documentaries that tells stories of people caught in a dark and twisted web of modern misinformation and digital deception. Haunting, bizarre and up-to-the-moment relevant, the series explores consequences of 'SWATing', takes a chilling trip down the rabbit hole of white supremacy, joins a Federal hunt for the suspect of a brazen IRS heist and investigates a murder set against the backdrop of Russian election interference. Rich with distinctive characters and surprising plotlines, reality is warped when the ordinary American household collides with a chaotic web of misinformation”.
The episodes are going to include ‘Death By Swat’ which tells the story of how an online gamer makes relentless fraudulent calls to 911 and tells them to send SWAT teams to innocent victims' homes until one of them turns out to be very tragic. ‘Murder In DC’ would explore Rich’s 2016 murder thanks to online conspiracies. ‘I’m Not a Nazi’ would deal with a woman being the main channel for white nationalists which would lead to a violent murder. ‘Sextortion’ talks about giving voice to victims of a person that constantly blackmailed them all for sensitive material and finally ‘The Stingray Part 1 And 2’ which opens up on the fraudulent schemes of two hackers that are experienced in conning and duping people.
