Spoilers for 'We Hunt Together' Episode 2

The latest and second episode of Showtime's new murder-thriller 'We Hunt Together' lays down how the conniving, manipulating, femme fatale Freddy (Hermione Corfield) might be a genius mastermind who's more evil than we could have imagined. The episode, however, also explored certain nuanced aspects of DS Lola Franks's (Eve Myles) life which explained just why she is so wary of social interaction and keeping her personal life under wraps. But what has us the most curious is a certain Jessica she was writing to. Who is this person and could their presence be a detriment to the case?

The episode kicks off in the aftermath of Freddy and Baba (Dipo Ola) murdering her older beau, Simon. They discuss if they are in the clear, and while Freddy's smug optimism is a sharp contrast to Baba's realistic having his guard up at all times, elsewhere Lola and DI Jackson Fendy (Babou Ceesay) are closing in on her as a prime suspect. But before we can jump to whether Freddy gets arrested for murdering Simon, Matt and yet another innocent man in a chain of cover-ups and staged crimes, let's pause on Lola for a bit.

After a hard day's work of interrogating the sex workers Simon had been interrogating, Lola decides to spend a few extra hours at work before heading to the strikingly stylish house she calls home. It's the first glimpse we get into Lola's personal life, as we watch her recline to an office chair, before beginning to scribble a birthday message on a diary. She isn't able to finish writing the message though, all she can get out is "Dear Jessica, Happy Birthd-" before getting consumed by the likely traumatic memory this message unravels. Right after, without finishing her message, she contemplates drugs.

It's obvious this sudden wave of emotion is too much, it's something Lola prefers keeping suppressed and locked away as she goes on badassing her way through cracking unsolved cases. But at the same time, it also makes one wonder who this Jessica could be. The lowest hanging fruit for speculation is of course a daughter who was taken away from Lola. Either in death, or due to some other probably sadder circumstances, but it's clear Lola doesn't have this Jessica in her life anymore. It could also be a past lover that Lola seems to be mourning in the solace and solitude of her own company. That would explain why Jackson's cheery family man side bothers Lola so much, probably it is a bit triggering for her. But should this Jessica's mystery have something to do with a string of unsolved murder, that amplifies the reasons for her being so heavily invested in the new mysterious murders in town. Sort of her own personal catharsis, if you will.

'We Hunt Together' airs on Sundays at 10 pm on Showtime.
