Netflix's ‘Virgin River’: Can city girl Melinda navigate the challenges of a remote town in Northern California?
A while ago, streaming network Netflix ordered straight-to-series for ‘Virgin River’, a romantic drama based on a novel of the same name, authored by Robyn Carr. The web television series dealing with a contemporary romance will premiere on December 6. The official trailer for ‘Virgin River’, which was released by Harlequin Books on November 22, focuses on the lead character Melinda Monroe’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) struggle for existence in a small town in Northern California, as she moves from LA looking for a fresh start.
Set in the mesmerizing backdrop of Virgin River, the trailer begins with Melissa explaining as to why she moved to the remote town, paralleled with a sarcastic tone. At this, the series establishes the protagonist’s approach towards living in a small region that doesn’t even support the internet, having hailed from a city where she must have led a comfortable life defined by materialistic pleasures.
Although one of her motives to move to the California town of Virgin River was driven by her need to serve people as a nurse practitioner, things don’t pan out according to her plan as the doctor under whom she works bluntly dismisses any help from her end.
Melinda sees light in the dark when she meets Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), who runs a small-scale restaurant in the town. We wouldn’t know if the restaurateur at first is trying to woo Melinda influenced by his inferiority complex towards city people, or if he simply finds her as beautiful as he described her to be. Nevertheless, the two of them soon hit off and are seen playing baseball in the woods as the trailer progresses.
Now the question remains if Melinda will be able to stick around long enough in this small town which marks the new beginning in her life or if she treats the whole experience as just another runaway train, temporarily escaping the harsh reality of life.
