Will Furious 5 and Sugarhill Gang clash at Verzuz? Scorpio writes to Timbaland and Swizz Beatz
Verzuz battles have become quite a rage since the concept was first introduced in March 2020 by legendary producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. Currently, in its second season, the audience has been enjoying the epic face-offs with both new school and old school rappers. Now, jumping into the trend, it seems rapper Scorpio, who is a part of the renowned The Furious Five group, wants to go join the battle.
Taking to his Instagram, Scorpio, who is one of the pioneers of hip-hop, penned a special letter to the creators of Verzuz asking them to consider a showdown between his group The Furious Five and The SugarHill Gang. He asked to discuss whether he along with Melle Mel can get the opportunity for a face-off against The SugarHill Gang. Speaking of Verzuz, some of the epic battles came from hip-hop legends such as Monica and Brandy, Snoop Dogg and the late DMX, Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, Nelly and Ludacris, Method Man and Redman and Alicia Keys and John Legend among a few others. The most recent Verzuz saw Bow Wow going against Soulja Boy and Keith Sweat locking horns with Bobby Brown.

With an intention to plan a face-off between The Furious Five and The SugarHill Gang, Scorpio in his special letter said, “I would like to take this opportunity to say ‘thank you’ for creating another level for the culture to elevate and continue to create in the world of hip hop as well as the music industry.” He continued, “The Verzuz platform will take its own place in history for the work that has been accomplished at a time when we needed it the most.”
The legendary rapper added, “As one of the pioneers of hip hop, I would like to submit a proposal for your consideration on behalf of The Furious 5 featuring Mele Mel & Scorpio and The Sugarhill Gang. Continued success. Looking forward to discussing an opportunity to be a part of the platform.” If the battle between the two groups becomes a reality, they will become the oldest hip-hop performers to grace the Verzuz stage. As of now, this title is held by The Isley Brothers who battled Earth, Wind & Fire on Easter Sunday.
Who are The Furious Five?
The Furious Five was earlier known as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and was formed in the South Bronx of New York City in 1978. The group's members consisted of Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, The Kidd Creole, Keef Cowboy, Scorpio and Rahiem. Even though they dropped only two albums — 1982’s ‘The Message’ and 1988’s ‘On The Strength’ — their contribution to hip-hop is immeasurable. Currently, the group is active with members Scorpio, Melle Mel and Rahiem along with Grandmaster Flash.
Who is the SugarHill Gang?
The SugarHill Gang consisted of three members when it was formed in the mid-'70s, namely Wonder Mike, Master Gee and Big Bank Hank. The latter died leaving only two members in the group. The squad is best known for their Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hit ‘Rapper’s Delight’ which was released in 1979. The renowned rap group dropped five studio albums, nine compilations and 15 singles in their illustrious career.
