Contains spoilers and speculation for 'Under Paris'

PARIS, FRANCE: 'Under Paris' started streaming on Netflix on June 5, 2024, and the dystopian aquatic horror film has unlocked unreal fears in the viewers as the film sees a shark mutate and create havoc in Paris.

The movie has many subtle undertones that try to convey the impending environmental dangers that human waste could create. The film's antagonist is a deadly mutated shark named Lilith who has evolved to reproduce on her own without the need for a partner and she finds herself in the Seine River in Paris wreaking havoc as a triathlon is bound to take place.

'Under Paris' follows the journey of a brilliant scientist Sophia Assalas (Bérénice Bejo) who teams up with a river policeman named Adil (Nassim Lyes) as they try to prevent the shark attack.

Among the things that have got people talking about 'Under Paris' is its end and what happens at the end of the film. One of the biggest talking points is a scene where Lilith and Sophia come face to face but Lilith decides not to attack Sophia and goes elsewhere. What could be the reason for that? Here is what we think.

Why does Lilith not attack Sophia?

Sophia, Adil, and the team decide to reach Lilith's nest and blast off Lilith's nest using explosives. They lose a couple of their team members but Sophia does blow off the explosives. Sophia and Adil think that they have reached safety but once Sophia goes back into the water, she realizes that Lilith is still alive and ferocious.

Lilith comes face to face with Sophia but doesn't attack her. The reason for not attacking her is probably her focus on the triathlon and the havoc she and her sharks want to create in Paris.

The movie begins with a quote, "The Species that survive aren't the strongest species, nor are they the most intelligent, but rather the ones who best adapt to change", based on the original quote by Charles Darwin. The entire film has an undertone of evolution where marine waste has endangered the livelihood of sharks and forced them to evolve.

With evolution, comes the ability to stamp authority over other species, like humans have over the years, so Lilith perhaps knows that her path to world dominance comes by sending a message through the triathlon.

'Under Paris' is a rare movie that breaks the established norms of filmmaking and doesn't give the audience a catharsis or a resolution in Act 3. At the end of the film, a huge explosion of World War 2 shells in the river causes tsunami in Paris.

The film ends with Sharks dominating Paris and if the post-credit map is to be believed, the entire world. With their evolution, sharks have become the dominant species in the world.

The movie shows a reality that human negligence of the environment could expose us to and the visuals of sharks circling Paris streets and subways is a scary reminder of what evolution of a species could do to the established norm.
