'Top Chef: Houston': Show slammed for brisket challenge as fans call it a 'sham'
Bravo's 'Top Chef: Houston' is becoming more and more challenging with each episode. After the previous episode of 'double-elimination', only 10 contestants were left on the show. The recently aired episode took on another iconic food from Texas, the brisket.
In the recent episode of 'Top Chef: Houston', all the contesting chefs met Brooke Williamson at J-Bar-M. Williamson gave contestants the task of putting their own spin on brisket dishes for some of the best BBQ pitmasters based in Houston and their guest judge, pitmaster Greg Gatlin. When the elimination round started, all the contestants were given only 30 minutes. Within this period, they had to choose their brisket, trim it, rub it and get it settled in the smoker before leaving for the supermarket to buy groceries. Contestants like Nick and Evelyn welcomed the challenge as an opportunity to show off their skills, while Monique and Buddha went down the French route. However, a few like Ashleigh misjudged their timing.

The chefs packed up their briskets until the next day's preparation time. As a result, all the contestants were clueless about the seasoning or tenderness of their meat until they got back to the kitchen the next day. An air of uncertainty hung around the contestants while they started with their preparation. Some were disappointed and unhappy like Ashleigh dish was lacking salt. Monique, on the other hand, is also sad and doesn't feel like her spices are coming through the smoky flavor.
However, Evelyn's brisket curry became the show-stealer. Evelyn has spent this whole season with goodies and victories. In addition, she also received the highest praise from host Padma Lakshmi.
As soon as the episode ended, fans started sharing their thoughts and opinions about the show, contestants and their flip with brisket dishes. A disappointed fan tweeted, "Luckily, there are actual pit masters in Houston to tend to the fires for @BravoTopChef It’s amazing that they allow chefs to season a brisket and call it bbq. What a sham." A fan appreciated Evelyn's efforts and tweeted,"You’re doing Houston proud, Chef Evelyn. #TopChef." Another fan tweeted, "Okay which houston bbq place is going to step up and get Evelyn to come make that curry? I am dying to try Padma-approved brisket curry… #topchef." Another fans made a suggestion by tweeting,"Dear contestants on #TopChef in Houston. I have heard some of you whine about not knowing how to make chile con queso and Texas toast. Maybe do some of research on popular dishes here before you come, since it's likely that some of the challenges are going to involve local dishes."
