'Tonight You're Sleeping with Me' Review: Predictable tale of infidelity has nothing new to say

The absence of a character's past makes it impossible for the audience to relate to the protagonist, which is yet another significant flaw

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A brand-new Polish film, titled 'Tonight You're Sleeping with Me' ('Dzisiaj spisz ze mna'), made its Netflix debut on March 1, 2023. The drama, directed by Robert Wichrowski, centres on a woman who is stuck in a loveless marriage until the appearance of her former partner turns everything around. The novel of the same name by Anna Szczypczynska served as the inspiration for the movie.

The movie stars Wojciech Zielinski, Maciej Musia, Jacek Koman, Malgorzata Mikolajczak, Ewa Wencel, Karolina Porcari, and Roma Gasiorowska in the lead role as Nina. The film's script is written by Anna Janyska, and it lasts roughly 92 minutes.

Ordinary story

The plot develops in a predictable way with a frustrated wife, a distant husband, and a long-lost love. The script is very predictable and doesn't allow for flexibility. The film takes a while to get going, but finally the characters commit adultery, just like in countless other films and TV shows that have already been produced. Although embracing infidelity is a prevalent theme of this tale, the story also makes an effort to present moralistic ideas. Every component of the film is predictable because the writers developed the plot using tried and tested methods. Only those who have never seen the sun or breathed fresh air would find anything novel in the tale. The absence of a character's past makes it impossible for the audience to comprehend or relate to the protagonist, which is yet another significant flaw. Some storylines call for us to acknowledge the lonely wife's plight with an awful mother, but these seem like scant justifications for finding solace in someone else.

Thoughts on the characters

Despite the script not really giving a chance for the characters to grow, Nina's acting in the movie is still a lot better. She has been able to depict a tired, frustrated woman in an ethical dilemma quite gracefully. Her husband (Zielinski), on the other hand, seemed a bit closed off. The screenplay was a huge disappointment to his character and Nina's former lover (Groszek). Both characters could have been used in a better way to elicit the tension between the two different situations. All in all, this is a movie you can play in the background while you're doing mundane tasks around the household since this movie doesn't need close attention.

'Tonight You're Sleeping with Me' is streaming on Netflix.
