Delays in release dates of movies and TV series have become inevitable due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For starters, Tom Cruise-starrer 'Top Gun' sequel 'Top Gun: Maverick' will now release on December 23, instead of June 24. This means, Chris Pratt's 'The Tomorrow War' is moved further down and is yet to get a release date. This makes 'Maverick' a great festival watch alongside 'Tom & Jerry', The Nightingale', 'The Croods 2' and 'News of the World'.

Cruise shares his thoughts on the rescheduled date. "I know many of you have waited 34 years. Unfortunately, it will be a little longer. Top Gun: Maverick will fly this December. Stay safe, everyone," he tweeted.

The official synopsis reads: "After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.

"When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka 'Goose.' Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it."

'Maverick' also stars Jennifer Connelly, Monica Barbaro, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Jean Louisa Kelly, Manny Jacinto, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Lyliana Wray.

In related news, 'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run' will release July 31, instead of its original Memorial Day weekend date May 22. John Krasinski-Emily Blunt starrer 'A Quiet Place II' will now open in theatres on September 4.
