'Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan' Season 2: New installment promises explosive action and it perfectly balances a thrilling plot

The pilot season traced the beginning of Ryan's CIA career and took its time in setting up characters, thereby decreasing the action element.

'Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan' was a stellar hit when it debuted on Amazon Prime in 2018. The eight-episode American political thriller starring John Krasinski as the titular character enjoyed a healthy 74% on Rotten Tomatoes with  88% of the audience rating it above-average. Such was the success of the first season that Amazon renewed the series for two more seasons.

Season 1 saw Ryan, the CIA analyst, pulled from the security of his desk job into the field after discovering a string of dubious bank transfers, which are being carried out by a rising extremist named Suleiman (Ali Suliman). Ryan successfully stops Suleiman from waging a biological attack on America. This also saw him promoted from analyst to head of T-Fad (Terror Finance and Arms Division).

The upcoming season promises a lot more high-octane action and the trailers show us just that. The footage then shows some mind-numbing action that we haven't witnessed in season 1 and unsurprisingly, has Ryan smack in the middle of it. The rest of the footage sees him tackle baddies, do a HALO jump off a plane and do a parkour-style action sequence where we see him leap off buildings. This is quite a contrast compared to its predecessor where the action percentage was relatively less.

And this is a good thing. The plotline of the season borrowed from Clancy's 'bestselling novel, 'Clear and Present Danger' has gripping action and it makes sense to incorporate that element in the series. The trailers also show us a leaner, meaner, fit and more seasoned version of Jack Ryan signaling there will be enough action this time around. It is also understandable that season 1 took its time in setting up characters. Krasinski's Ryan was a man who still had nightmares from his marine days. He wasn't a man who would fire at will and shed blood. That reluctance is seen when he shoots Ali (Haaz Sleiman) when the terrorist tries to kill him.

The pilot season traced the beginning of Ryan's CIA career. He spends enough time in his desk before jetting off on on-field duties. His jacked-up '13 Hours' physique didn't have to endure a lot of damage and it's great news for fans as he gears up for some intense action in season 2. The new installment sees him as a more seasoned agent. He's a man who' spent considerable time on the field in the previous season and combat-ready. With most of the pivotal characters' arcs already established, it makes sense to crank up the action element. It's a step forward since there is a season 3 already in the pipeline.

The official synopsis of season 2 reads: "After tracking a potentially suspicious shipment of illegal arms in the Venezuelan jungle, CIA Officer Jack Ryan heads down to South America to investigate.  As Jack’s investigation threatens to uncover a far-reaching conspiracy, the President of Venezuela launches a counter-attack that hits home for Jack, leading him and his fellow operatives on a global mission spanning the United States, U.K., Russia, and Venezuela to unravel the President’s nefarious plot and bring stability to a country on the brink of chaos."

'Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan' is co-produced by Amazon Studios, Paramount Television, and Skydance Television. Season 2 also stars Wendell Pierce as James Greer, Noomi Rapace, and Michael Kelly in crucial roles. Season 2 premieres November 1 on Amazon Prime.
