Netflix is bringing for its viewers a docuseries on the bizarre life of Joe Exotic, the self-fashioned “Tiger King” whose murder-for-hire plan saw him cooling his heels in jail.

A former Oklahoma zoo operator, big cat breeder and gubernatorial and presidential candidate,  Joseph Maldonado-Passage or 'Joe Exotic' lived quite the colorful, thrilling life up until his conspiracy to kill the woman he thought of as his nemesis came back to haunt him. Earlier in 2020, Joe was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the plot to kill animal rights activist Carole Baskin in 2017 and several wildlife violations.

He shot and killed five tigers with a shotgun, sold baby lemurs and falsified paperwork to claim they were donated. And this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Here is everything you need to know about Netflix's revealing docuseries on Joe Exotic.

Release date

'Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness' seven-episode docuseries releases on Netflix on March 20, 2020.

Plot

According to the official synopsis: "Among the eccentrics and cult personalities in the stranger-than-fiction world of big cat owners, few stand out more than Joe Exotic, a mulleted, gun-toting polygamist and country western singer who presides over an Oklahoma roadside zoo. Charismatic but misguided, Joe and an unbelievable cast of characters including drug kingpins, conmen, and cult leaders all share a passion for big cats, and the status and attention their dangerous menageries garner.

"But things take a dark turn when Carole Baskin, an animal activist and owner of a big cat sanctuary, threatens to put them out of business, stoking a rivalry that eventually leads to Joe’s arrest for a murder-for-hire plot and reveals a twisted tale where the only thing more dangerous than a big cat is its owner."

Creators/Producers

Chris Smith, Fisher Stevens, Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin serve as executive producers.
