Concept
The original 'House Of Balloons' was released online for free back in 2011 and its songs were posted subsequently on his YouTube channel. The mixtape incorporates a blend of electronic and contemporary genres, including R&B and soul, as well as trip-hop, indie rock, and dream pop. Canadian record producers such as Doc McKinney, Zodiac and Illangelo, among others, contributed to the record's production.
The original project also features key samples from Aaliyah's 2001 song 'Rock the Boat', Beach House's 'Master of None' (2006) and 'Gila' (2008), the Cocteau Twins' 1990 track 'Cherry-Coloured Funk', and more. Those samples were never cleared for a full official release, until now. Fans will get a chance to hear the original mixes and samples in the mixtape's entirety when the contemporary R&B star celebrates its 10th anniversary.
In 2012, The Weeknd 'House Of Balloons' with his other 2011 mixtapes 'Thursday' and 'Echoes of Silence' for his first compilation album 'Trilogy'. That album peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and hit No. 1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in 2012.
The singer performed the mixtape's title track 'House of Balloons' at the Super Bowl LV halftime show last month. For those unaware, The Weeknd has revealed that the House of Balloons is a real place, located at 65 Spencer Ave in Toronto.
