'The Walking Dead' trailer teases introduction of 'The Whisperers' for upcoming season 9

Hidden amongst the growls at the end of the trailer is a hint that indicates the Whisperers may make their bow in season 9.

'The Walking Dead' panel at this week's San Diego International Comic-Con was arguably one of the most awaited, and fans were not disappointed. The first trailer for the upcoming season 9 of the post-apocalyptic trailer dropped, and at 5-and-a-half minutes long, it was packed with information on how events may unfold. While there were no clues to how Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes would bid goodbye — the actor had previously confirmed his departure after the conclusion of season 9 — there was an easter egg that indicated the season will welcome an iconic group from the comics.

The end of season 8 saw Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) take a decision to spare Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). The decision did not sit well with Maggie (Lauren Cohan), who lost her husband Glenn (Steven Yeun) to the psychopath's rampage. Fans had theorized that this might see her take on a new character arc, separating from the group, though the trailer indicates that she's put the issue behind her to live with Rick and others in the sanctuary.

The primary focus of season 9 appears to be how Rick manages to keep the numerous factions sharing the sanctuary from warring against another as differences in lifestyle and beliefs slowly fray already strained relationships. At one point, Michonne can be heard discussing how they need to lay down ground rules for how people must treat one another while inside the sanctuary and, of course, the punishments to be handed out if these rules are broken.

Despite his best efforts, not all the groups can be satisfactorily appeased, and soon enough, fights begin to break out at an increasing frequency. At one point, there's even a confrontation between Rick and Darryl (Norman Reedus), teasing what could be the answer to the question of 'How will the showrunners give Rick the dignified exit he deserves?' Will Darryl be responsible for his death? Perhaps.

But while all of these tidbits are apparent, there's one aspect that sharp-eared fans on Reddit managed to glean from the trailer that any casual fan would have missed. A scene at the end shows Rosita (Christian Serratos) and another unidentified male character hiding in the mud from a group of crossing walkers. It was odd to say the least, especially since we've seen Rosita hacking down hordes with reckless abandon in the past.

A closer listen reveals exactly why they appear to be so horrified. Season 9 will finally see the introduction of the Whisperers! Those versed in comic book lore will know that the Whisperers are this terrifying group who skin the walkers and wear the dead epidermis, using that scent to mask their own and live amongst the dead undetected.

As the group of walkers passes Rosita and the other character, their guttural growls dominate the trailer, but amongst the growls is one voice that rasps "Where are they?" Turns out the Whisperers are communicating through walker growls. But because the two are unaware of the group's existence, they believe that the undead have finally evolved to learn to communicate. A mind-numbing prospect indeed!
