'The Walking Dead': Season 9 trailer confirms departure of Rick Grimes and arrival of the Whisperers
'The Walking Dead' season 9 is expected to be a landmark one with lead character Rick Grimes departing and new showrunner Angela Kang coming on board
The first full trailer of 'The Walking Dead' season nine is out and teases a massive community war and the appearance of 'The Whisperers'. In the five-minute trailer released at San Diego Comic-Con, there is intense tension between communities a war breaks out between Rick, Daryl and Maggie.
The fans are expecting the ninth season to be a landmark in 'The Walking Dead' history with Andrew Lincoln, who plays the lead character Rick Grimes, departing and new showrunner Angela Kang coming on board.
'The Walking Dead' creator Robert Kirkman recently confirmed Andrew Lincoln’s departure saying it’ll be the biggest jump yet from the comics where Rick is still alive. Kirkman said, "It does make the differences between the comic and the show more pronounced. But, at the end of the day, it’s all about Andrew Lincoln."
"This is a human being. This is someone I have known for almost a decade, somebody that I love. He’s been sweating in Georgia, away from his family, for so long," he added. The director also teased how there’s "something special" planned for Rick’s exit from the show.
The first eight episodes of season nine were filmed in Atlanta, Georgia. The ninth season picks up where the eighth season had left off and we now know that Negan is alive and living without his Saviors. The biggest conversation, however, is what happens after Grimes leaves — something that has all but been confirmed at this point.
“That’s stuff I obviously don’t want to spoil for fans, but I think what I can tell you is that we’ve got a great story for Rick,” new showrunner Angela Kang told Deadline prior to the show’s panel. “He’s actively thinking about what needs to be done to build for the future.”
Grimes, played by Andrew Lincoln, has always represented the show’s steadfast leader. His departure comes just one season after his son, Carl, was killed off.
AMC renewed the show in January but the changes behind the scene are reflected on the trailer itself. Long-time writer and co-executive producer Angela Kang has been promoted to showrunner while current boss Scott M Gimple has been elevated to Chief Content Officer to oversee the entire Walking Dead TV universe.
The show on premieres on Fox in the US on October 7.
