Spoiler Alert for ‘The Undoing’ and the 2014 novel ‘You Should Have Known’

Like a game of chess, HBO's ‘The Undoing’ has all its pieces on the board and no one knows which side will win or lose. Elena Alves (Matilda De Angelis) was bludgeoned to death in her studio and all the evidence points toward Jonathan Fraser (Hugh Grant) as he had an affair with her and the two even have a daughter.

The suspicion also hangs on Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman) who was found walking by the scene of the crime on the same night it happened. But does that mean she’s the killer? Or is it their son, Henry Fraser (Noah Jupe)? The fifth episode ‘Trial By Fury’ ends with a major cliffhanger as Grace finds the hammer in Henry's violin case. Who put it there? Did Henry kill Elena or is he protecting Jonathan? Or perhaps, Jonathan planted it there without his knowledge?

In Jean Hanff Korelitz's novel, ‘You Should Have Known’, Grace receives a letter from Jonathan with his confession that he indeed killed her and the mystery is solved. Will the series go the same way or end with a new twist? Many fans feel that not Jonathan, someone else could turn out to be the murderer in the end. There may be many theories floating around but the case will only be solved once the final episode airs.

Titled ‘The Bloody Truth’, the episode will unleash the ugly truth and hopefully put the real murderer behind the bars. A summary for the episode reads: “Haley walks an ethical tightrope in her defense strategy, and as the courtroom theater mounts, Grace takes measures to protect herself and her family.” Even with that revealed, it manages to keep the mystery under the covers. The sixth episode — directed by Susanne Bier and written by David E Kelley — seems to be the most anticipated finale ever.

Is Jonathan the killer?

Many viewers feel Jonathan could be the killer but he will escape the punishment with his shrewd tactics. “We are given every reason to believe that Jonathan is the murderer. It is so comically obvious that even the viewers believe that this is too easy; he couldn’t be the murderer, and so we go off on other clues to pin the murder on someone else. But his guilt is so glaringly obvious: his DNA is found all over the crime scene. We see how unhinged he is, how he lacks boundaries by entering Elena’s old apartment. How he is ruthless and will bite a finger off. How he most likely killed his own dog (referring to the story Grace told in the beginning; torture of animals is an early sign of a sociopath),” one Reddit fan said.

Is Grace the killer?

“Can we talk about how Grace said she never picks up numbers she doesn’t know but we literally listened to her picking up a telemarketer that says she won a free cruise or something?” one viewer said and another added, “I definitely feel that Grace herself is unhinged. She wanders the streets at night, she seems confused by people and emotions, and her father seems very protective of her. I definitely suspect that she killed Elena, and I think she could possibly have a split personality.”

Is Henry the killer?

Calling Henry “super suspicious”, one fan pointed out, “In the first episode he is SO panicked when the police are in the kitchen like he’s afraid they’re there for him. He also says “is this about the murder?” And then everyone is shocked he knows and he hastily goes “I saw it on my phone”. He also is constantly watching the news on his phone, like he’s making sure no one suspects him yet. We see the other children all talking to the detectives about Miguel yet when Grace asks Henry he oddly has no idea who he is. When Grace is questioning why Jonathan went into his room and kissed his head before he left and is like “does he always do that?” And he seems panicked and kind of backtracks, like he was caught in a lie.”

“The way he sneaks up on his mom so many times and she jumps, the way he’s constantly listening in on people. I also find his sass very unnerving... how he speaks to his principal, the way he asks his dad if he “fu**ed” her, when he says, “I heard you left a footprint on [principal’s] head”...like what an oddly graphic way to describe it? Him saying he likes the violin because it’s different was also so weird?” the Reddit user continued.

Do you think that's how the series will end? Going by the episodes that have already aired, the plot seems to be much thicker and confusing than the book. It seems the killer would turn out to be someone we least expect.

In a 48-second teaser, Grace says she is “willing to testify” and announces: “I'm just gonna tell the truth.” Their lawyer, Haley Fitzgerald (Noma Dumezweni) retorts, “But what is your truth?” In another scene, Grace lashes out at Jonathan after he starts to doubt his son. “Could he have gone there that night for some reason?” Jonathan asks, to which Grace angrily snaps back, “Are you actually accusing our son?”

Meanwhile, Haley tells them, “Should this come to light, it is game over!” In the courtroom, Jonathan is asked, “You discovered Elena Alves. You didn't call the police?” In a panic mode, he covers up, “I panicked, you see, I panicked.” The promo ends with a montage of scenes that point to a thrilling and chilling end. Are you ready to tune into HBO at 9 pm?
