Spoilers for ‘The Undoing’

With not much time left for the thrilling ‘The Undoing’ finale, who killed Elena Alves seems to be the buzzing question. Through the episodes, Jonathan Fraser's (Hugh Grant) psychopath instincts have been stressed quite a bit. Could he turn out to be the killer in the end?

The fifth episode ‘Trial By Fury’ ended on a shocking note as Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman) discovered the hammer — the murder weapon — in her son, Henry Fraser's (Noah Jupe) violin case. While many fans were wondering if Henry had a hand in the murders, new theories speculate that Jonathan could have hidden the hammer at the beach house.

“When Henry is watching the news on his iPad at his grandfather's house and Grace tells him to turn it off they show a close-up of him watching. When the news anchor mentioned the hammer that was used as a murder weapon Henry looked visibly startled. Maybe he has seen the hammer somewhere at the beach house,” one Reddit fan said. Another posted, “The night of the murder: Elena is crying in distress at the fundraiser because of her guilt; she feels guilty and wants to back out of the getaway plan. Jonathan meets Elena at the art studio to begin their escape; Elena is in deep distress and wants to tell Grace about the whole plan; they get in a big fight and Jonathan in a fit of rage grabs a hammer and kills her.”

It continues, “Jonathan flees with the murder weapon; he returns the murder weapon to Henry’s violin case either a) the night of the murder when he kisses his son goodbye before supposedly leaving for Cleveland, or b) at the beach house. Jonathan tells Henry that he is the killer. Henry idolizes his dad and is willing to conceal the secret and protect his family.”

Hinting that it could have been Jonathan who told Henry to hide the hammer, a third fan pointed out the actual events. “At the beach house, Jonathan hugs Henry and tells him he didn't do it as Grace calls the police. Henry takes his violin out of its case and plays it as the police search the grounds outside. We don't see the case. At Franklin's house, Henry watches a newscast that mentions the murder weapon, then he runs into his room and searches his closet for a bag that he dumps onto his bed.”

Another fan also goes on to say, “In the days leading up to the getaway plan, Elena gets to know Grace and realizes how nice Grace is; she starts to feel guilty about the getaway plan; she becomes obsessed with Grace and wants to be a part of her family – a family that she was left out of; she tries calling her several times in the days before the fundraiser. Perhaps this is when she paints the portrait of Grace.”

What's confusing is how Jonathan tries to put the blame on his son. But, isn't that exactly what a sociopath would do? In a 48-second teaser, Grace says she is “willing to testify” and announces: “I'm just gonna tell the truth.” Their lawyer, Haley Fitzgerald (Noma Dumezweni) retorts, “But what is your truth?” In another scene, Grace lashes out at Jonathan after he starts to doubt his son. “Could he have gone there that night for some reason?” Jonathan asks, to which Grace angrily snaps back, “Are you actually accusing our son?”

Meanwhile, Haley tells them, “Should this come to light, it is game over!” In the courtroom, Jonathan is asked, “You discovered Elena Alves. You didn't call the police?” In a panic mode, he covers up, “I panicked, you see, I panicked.” The promo ends with a montage of scenes that point to a thrilling and chilling end. Are you ready to tune into HBO at 9 pm.

‘The Undoing’ premiered on HBO on October 25, 2020, and more episodes in the six-episodic series aired every Sunday from 9 pm ET to 10 pm ET. Catch the final episode ‘The Bloody Truth’ on Sunday, November 29, 2020.
