‘The Undoing’ Episode 6 Spoilers: Will Jonathan get away with the crime only to be found guilty later?
Most criminals are masterminds. And many of them are psychopaths. HBO's ‘The Undoing’ charts on the same path in Episode 5 ‘Trial by Fury’ as it peeks into Jonathan Fraser's (Hugh Grant) troubled childhood. Remember the dead dog story Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman) told her son, Henry Fraser (Noah Jupe)? Turns out, it was a lie.
Delivering a deeply disturbing detail, the penultimate episode shows Grace in a conversation with Jonathan, where he reveals it was not a dog that was killed. When he was a boy, Jonathan was at home with his four-year-old sister watching her but he concentrated on his sandwich and she died. As the episode comes to a close, Grace gets a face-time call from Jonathan's estranged mother and her mum-in-law drops a huge shocker. Grace addresses the tragedy from Jonathan's past of how his sister died and the blame was on him. His mom then tells her that he expressed “neither guilt nor grief” and hints on how he turned into a sociopath.
With that revelation, it seems quite possible that Jonathan could be the killer, even though he has been trying to prove his innocence since the very beginning. As is characteristic of psychopaths, they can outsmart people and make them believe something that isn't even true. Could Jonathan do the same?
One Reddit fan believes he is the killer but he won't be caught. “It's Jonathan, but he won't be convicted,” the comment read, adding, “This show is all about how money is literally power and control. Jonathan is a psychopath. Even odds we discover another dead girlfriend in his past. The entire point is that he is guilty, and it's obvious. And he'll still get away with it. I'm guessing Elena's widow gets pinned for it, because he's poor. Grace will find all of this out, and be powerless to stop it. She's going to feel like a fraud because she's a psychologist and never saw it coming.”
Another said the same. “I'm not sure I believe my choice but here it is: Jonathan. I'd swear he is innocent even though DNA at the crime scene points to him and no one else. But my reasoning for choosing him is that I keep seeing Jonathan displaying a dark side whenever he feels threatened. I think Elena didn't want to actually run away with Jonathan and he made love to convince her. It didn't work and she was maybe going to expose him. He murders her. Now I think the courtroom drama won't actually find anyone guilty. Any and all Frasers (Jonathan, Grace, Henry) are free in the 6th episode, and Grace is seen trying 'to save her family' from someone. That's the car chase/car collision. But the police aren't after the Frasers so Jonathan doesn't seem to wind up in jail. So Jonathan, but he gets acquitted.”
