Spoilers for 'The Third Day' Episode 4 'The Mother'

By the end of 'Summer', the first three episodes of the HBO miniseries 'The Third Day', Osea Island had absorbed Sam (Jude Law) into it. The rightful heir to the island (a piece of information that Sam wasn't privy to), he is deemed the leader of this (weird) cult. The prospect of meeting his son once again (who may or may not be dead), Sam stays on.

He had been missing for months - vanished from the face of the earth - following his visit to the island. As he embraced his life here, Sam left his wife and two daughters behind in London. At the end of its fourth episode, the show made a shocking revelation - Helen (Naomie Harris) is Sam's wife. And she is here for answers. When she first arrives on the island, it is to give her daughter Ellie (Nico Parker) a birthday surprise. But neither Ellie nor her younger daughter Tallulah aka Lulu (Charlotte Gairdner-Mihell) are keen on being here. The eerie air around the island makes it even more strange for the two kids.

The cottage she had booked refuses to let her in at the last minute. They then look for another hotel which is also not welcoming to guests. Finally, Helen thinks she has found something worthwhile until that doesn't work out either. What it does do though is put a display of the bloody, violent, spooky happenings and rituals of the island. At every stop that Helen makes (with her two daughters in the car), tell her to leave the island and go back, but Helen is persistent even in the face of the unknown. Is that really just her or is she not aware of the dangers that lurk at Osea?

Finally, they arrive at the inn of the Martins (Paddy Considine and Emily Watson). The couple give the family a room just like they had given one to Sam - by first refusing in and then seemingly coming to the conclusion. Is this a setup? Did the entire island and its inhabitants plot this so that Helen brings her children here? It also appears that Harris' character has arrived at Osea under a false identity. If you recall, Sam had referred to her as Caz, but she tells everyone she meets at the island that her name is Helen. It is possible that she doesn't want to risk being discovered.

There are several doubts surrounding Helen's arrival on the island - most of them are to do with her and her daughters' safety. All we can do is hope she knows better than Sam. 'The Third Day' airs at 9 pm EST on HBO. The episodes will be available to stream on HBO Max following the airing.
