Starz's upcoming limited miniseries 'The Spanish Princess' is based on Philippa Gregory’s 'The Cousins’ War' series, with the network having already received raving hits for two of Gregory's novel based shows, 'The White Queen,' and 'The White Princess.'

Considered a sequel to these adaptations, 'The Spanish Princess,' is set in the 16th century and will follow the story of Catherine of Aragon, the Spanish princess, and heir to the English throne.

Here's all you need to know about the historical drama.

Release date

The period drama will premiere on May 5 on Starz and Starzplay. Just like 'Outlander,' it will also be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Plot

Based on historical fiction novels 'The Constant Princess' and 'The King’s Curse' by Philippa Gregory, 'The Spanish Princess,' revolves around the story of Catherine of Aragon and her rise to power in England. She is just a teenager when we meet her and the story starts after she becomes the Princess of Wales.

"She is Princess of Wales now, but when her husband Prince Arthur dies suddenly, the throne seems lost to Catherine," reads a description of the series. "Until she claims her marriage was never consummated and that as a virgin she may set her sights on the new heir, the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry who will one day rule as King Henry VIII."

Giving more insights into the plot, showrunner Matthew Graham said in panel at the TCAs; “From the age of 4, she had been told God is giving you the throne of England. It was not superstition or faith–it was fact," he said, according to Deadline. "When circumstances changed and the throne seemed to be out of her grip, she refused to believe that was God’s will. She had to fulfill the destiny God had laid out for her...As writers, we went along with the notion she believed this was the right thing to do for the stability of Europe."

Now, the official synopsis reads, "Catherine of Aragon, the beautiful teenaged princess of Spain who was promised the English throne since she was a child. She arrives in a grey, rain-lashed England with her glorious and diverse court, including her lady-in-waiting Lina, a Sub-Saharan African. She becomes Princess of Wales, but when her husband Prince Arthur dies suddenly, the throne seems lost to Catherine. However, she claims her marriage was never consummated and that therefore as a virgin she may set her sights on the new heir, the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry who will one day rule as King Henry VIII."

As history has it, Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII's relationship was a troubled one that had repercussions not only for England but also for the future of the Catholic Church.

The trailer opens with marriage for a political purpose - to unite Spain and England against the French, and we see exorbitant ceremonies and good tidings. Before long, it is revealed that Prince Arthur has died and she is no longer heir to the English throne. Then Catherine is introduced to Prince Henry and their love story is given a look. However, the trailer ends with Catherine saying; "I am Princess of Spain. The daughter of the two greatest monarchs this world has ever known. If you challenge me, I shall defeat you."
