Set in a grim dystopian world where water is an extreme scarcity, 'The Silent Sea' follows the story of Doctor Song Ji-an (Bae Doona), who agrees to join a mission to retrieve mystery samples from South Korea's Balhae space station on the moon. However, Dr Song has ulterior motives, seeing that she is determined to find out what happened to her sister, Won Kyung, who has the head researcher at the centre.

If you're looking for other K-dramas across genres, you might want to consider 'Hellbound', 'Hospital Playlist', 'Penthouse' and 'Mad for Each Other'.

The final episode in the series, titled 'The Silent Sea', reveals what happened at the Balhae facility. After Dr Song's entire crew was attacked and many of them killed, they finally managed to catch the person behind it, a young girl named Luna 073. Dr Song soon makes a startling discovery; the Balhae centre was conducting cell fusion and genetic recombination experiments to find a way for humans to survive the effects of Lunar Water.

Lunar Water, which is water found on the moon, acts like a virus and quickly multiples when it comes in contact with a host body. This causes people to die as the water in their bodies rapidly multiples, causing their death to look like a drowning. Luna073, a human clone that was tested on, is the only one with the antibodies to survive the effects of Lunar Water. As the Balhae station fills up with Lunar Water threatening to kill the remainder of the crew, they stumble upon an infected Tae-suk (Lee Joon), who has the last surviving samples of the Lunar Water. Delirious, he apologises to Dr Song, as he was a part of the firing squad that trapped the 117 Balhae scientists five years ago, causing their death.

Soo Hyuk (Lee Moo Saeng) attacks him and ends up wounded as well, as he slowly dies while the remainder of the team gear up to escape the station. Here, Captain Han realises that the main hatch won't open due to the controls being jammed, and to save Luna, Dr Song and Dr Hong Gayoung (Kim Sun Young), he will have to access the controls from the outside. But this all means his imminent death, as Lunar Water floods the space station. He tells Dr Song to never leave Luna alone out of fear that she will be experimented on and manages to save them in time. Dr Song soon realises that Luna is nowhere to be found.

She and Dr Hong barely make it outside until a massive wave of Lunar Water thrusts them onto the surface of the moon. Dr Song soon discovers something startling -- Luna has shed her astronaut suit. She can walk on the surface of the moon and breathe easily, proving that the Lunar Water has altered her system entirely, making her able to withstand space itself. As she faces Captain Han in his dying moments, the rescue ship finally arrives, with an announcement being heard that the survivors along with the only surviving Lunar Water samples, have been secured.

'The Silent Sea' premieres on Netflix on December 24, 2021.
