'The Old Guard': Charlize Theron as the slick and immortal badass Andy makes for the ultimate superhero

Charlize Theron has a brand-new action thriller coming to Netflix. In 'The Old Guard', based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka ('Stumptown'), Theron plays the lead role of Andy, a part that's absolutely perfect for her.

Andy is an immortal warrior who's over six thousand years old. She's a powerful woman who's strong, slick and so very tired of her practically eternal life. Honestly, it's like this role was written for Theron. While Theron has acted in movies based on graphic novels before and had a superpowered role in the 2008 movie 'Hancock', this is technically her first role in a movie like this. That's honestly quite surprising considering Theron's established creds as a great action star.

Over the years, the South African-American actor has proven her skill in both action and character roles. And the character of Andy combines traits from some of her most memorable performances. She's as suave as Lorraine Broughton from 'Atomic Blonde', as charismatic as Imperator Furiosa from 'Mad Max: Fury Road', a hardened warrior like the titular character in 'Æon Flux' and she's got her own unique blend of wit and badassery.

Fun fact, Theron actually tore her thumb ligament during a stunt for the movie. So she's literally put her blood and sweat into this project and we're really hoping that pays dividends. There are more books planned in the graphic novel series so we're really hoping this movie develops into a proper franchise and we couldn't think of a better actor to be the face of this fledgling superhero series.

Of course, it all depends on how well 'The Old Guard' does once it comes out on Netflix. But with such a huge star in the lead role and source material that is as unique as it is exciting, we're pretty sure it's all going to work out for both Theron and the movie.

'The Old Guard' is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood ('Beyond the Lights') and stars Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, and Chiwetel Ejiofor in leading roles. It follows the adventures of a group of semi-immortal soldiers whose secret existence is on the brink of being made public.

Catch Theron's exciting new film when it drops on Netflix on July 10.
