Spanish-language shows on Netflix have attained an enormous amount of success in the last few years. And if you’re a fan of the teen drama ‘Elite’, then this upcoming show from its creator is just what you have been waiting for. Here’s all you need to know about ‘El desorden que dejas’ or ‘The Mess You Leave Behind’.
Release date
‘El desorden que dejas’ or ‘The Mess You Leave Behind’ will premiere on Netflix on Friday, December 11.
Plot
Based on a novel of the same name, which won Carlos Montero a Primavera Literature Award, ‘El desorden que dejas’ or ‘The Mess You Leave Behind’ is a thriller set in the rural environment of Galicia. The show, per the official Netflix synopsis, “combines drama and suspense through two timelines that intertwine the story” of its two protagonists -- Raquel, the new teacher who has just arrived at the village’s high school, and Viruca, the teacher replaced by Raquel who had a tragic ending. These two teachers will be suddenly enveloped in a “spiral of threats, lies, and mysteries that will change their lives, and the lives of their families, forever”.
Cast
Bárbara Lennie as Viruca
The 36-year-old Spanish actor is best known for her roles in films like ‘Magical Girl’, ‘Obaba’, and ‘El Niño’. and the television series ‘Isabel’ and ‘El incidente’.
Inma Cuesta as Raquel
The 40-year-old Spanish actor is best known for playing Margarita Hernando in the television series ‘Águila Roja’, playing Ruth Belloso in ‘Three Many Weddings’, and playing La novia in ‘The Bride’. She is also known for her role as Ana Mari in the television series ‘Arde Madrid’.
Creator
‘El desorden que dejas’ or ‘The Mess You Leave Behind’ has been developed by Carlos Montero, who has also directed two episodes of the eight-part series. Talking about the show, and about his previous hit, ‘Elite’, Montero said earlier this year, “I would almost say it’s the reverse of ‘Elite’. Here we are in a school again but focus on the adult world.”
He said, “We are always dealing with bullying between students, and yet many teachers can tell you about when they feel attacked by students and are afraid of even going to class. That is terrifying when someone tells it in the first person. So, I wanted to talk about that, the arrival of a young teacher in a place where she is received with hostility, without knowing why. That leads her to investigate what is happening. That main plotline is the theme of the novel: the mess left behind by the absence of a recently deceased person or a loved one when they leave and you find yourself rebuilding your life.”
Trailer
The trailer for ‘El desorden que dejas’ or ‘The Mess You Leave Behind’ brings back memories of Montero’s writing in ‘Elite’. We see the new teacher arrive at a school to immediate hostilities. And her own anxieties mix with something dark in the air. The trailer promises a good thriller, and with Montero at the helm of the project, that seems almost a guarantee.
