'The Mandalorian' Season 2: Is Fennec Shand returning, if so which part will the formidable bounty hunter play?

Ming-Na Wen's Fennec Shand was criminally underserved in Season 1, but she may be returning...with an axe to grind

There were many memorable characters who appeared throughout Season 1 of 'The Mandalorian', but Ming-Na Wen's Fennec Shand may have been one of the most underserved of all of them. A bounty hunter with enough formidable skill to rival the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) himself, she was unfortunately outdone by the betrayal of a less experienced bounty hunter, and left for dead in the desserts of Tatooine. Left for dead isn't the same as killed, however, and a post-credits scene for the episode reveals that she might not be as dead as the Mandalorian may have assumed - and that episode might not be the last we've seen of her.

That post-credits scene is one of the bigger unanswered questions from 'The Mandalorian' Season 1. In it, we see an identified person, walking across the desert floor to where Fennec Shand lays dying, before the screen cuts to black. All that's seen of this person are their boots, and the edge of a cape. Most fans theorize that those boots belong to Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) - especially because that cape is a dead giveaway. Other fans have theorized that it's Boba Fett, who will also be appearing in the show's second season, played by Temuerra Morrison.

If it's the former, then Fennec Shand is likely in serious debt to Moff Gideon - which spells trouble for the Mandalorian. Given Moff Gideon's impressive resources, it wouldn't take much for him to nurse Shand back to health, before hiring her to track down the Mandalorian and retrieve the Child. Given that the Mandalorian was the one who tracked Shand down, and tied her up, leaving her vulnerable for the kill, she's certainly got her own grudge against him - being paid to track him down is surely only a bonus.

If the caped figure turns out to be Boba Fett, however, then it's anyone's guess as to what Fennec - or for that matter, Boba Fett - may do next. Boba Fett is a true wild card for Season 2. As a bounty hunter, Boba Fett's motivations lie entirely in the hands of whoever's paying him the most, much like Fennec Shand herself, and with the Empire fallen, Fett's main source of income has dried up. It's not impossible that he would offer his services to Moff Gideon, however - and if both Fett and Shand are gunning for the Mandalorian, he's in a lot more trouble than he bargained for.

'The Mandalorian' releases on Friday, October 30, on Disney+.
