Alice (Olivia Dudley) is grieving the death of Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph). So, big surprise the trailer for episode 2 of season 5 shows her trying something very unorthodox. She tells Eliot  (Hale Appleman) that she has created a "golem", a clay figure that can be turned into a living human. While she exclaims that "it worked", Julia scolds her, saying "it didn't" and how she thought she "could do something like this".

The overabundance of magic is showing its effects as well and threatens to destroy the world and also Fillory. Spell castings are being exponentially magnified and enchantments are malfunctioning, with devastating effects like uncontrolled explosions.

We also see Margo (Summer Bishil), Eliot, Fen (Brittany Curran) and Josh (Trevor Einhorn) banding together against the Dark King. So hopefully, Margo and Eliot will figure out some way to bring Fen and Josh back after their beheading. After losing Quentin, we really can't deal with a dead Fen and Josh too!

In another creepy shot, we see Eliot stare into the mirror only to see a dark Eliot doppelganger staring back at him with the ominous voiceover which intones, "death is coming for everyone". In the midst of all this gloom, there is a ray of hope because of a powerful spell that Alice finds that Quentin had stashed away.

When Alice shows it to the others, Penny (Arjun Gupta) wonders what Quentin was doing with something so powerful. With the apocalypse nigh (again), Julia Wicker (Stella Maeve), with her magic restored, will step up again.

As she puts it to Penny, Margo, Eliot, Alice and Josh, "the world ends, I end with it, knowing that I did everything I could because I won't be able to live with myself otherwise". Hopefully, the gang will figure out something to get things back to normal -- or as normal as it gets on 'The Magicians'.

'The Magicians' airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on Syfy.
