'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' Season 2 must fix one Gil-galad problem
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'The Lord of the Rings' Season 1 faced some significant issues that need addressing for Season 2 to resonate better with audiences. Despite its flaws, the series has become Prime Video’s flagship fantasy series.
Drawing from the rich lore of J. R. R. Tolkien, 'The Rings of Power' explores the events of the Second Age, far before Gollum found the One Ring. Although responses were mixed, the series was celebrated for its stunning visuals, Bear McCreary's sweeping score, and captivating performances and combat sequences.
One critical area for improvement is the portrayal of Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker). In Season 1, he was often depicted as a pompous and misguided leader, a stark contrast to the noble and wise figure in Tolkien’s books.
'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' Season 2 is all set to release on August 29 on Prime Video.
Gil-galad's characterization in Season 1 of 'The Lord of the Rings' sparks debate
Season 1 of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' had high points and justifiable issues, with Galadriel's portrayal being a significant point of contention. Many fans disliked her brash, warlike nature, seeing it as a departure from the regal character in Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings'.
However, most of Tolkien's Elves were inherently warlike, their immortal nature making them emotionally distant and brash. Viewers questions why the other Elves were so passive rather than why Galadriel was warlike.
Despite her insistence on lingering evil in Middle-earth, High King Gil-galad tried to send Galadriel to Valinor, with Elrond siding with him. This response felt like a chastisement for following her instincts. Gil-galad's portrayal in Season 1 was problematic. He was depicted as a pompous leader, a far cry from the wise and noble figure in Tolkien's books.
To honor Tolkien's vision, Season 2 must refine Gil-galad's character arc, showcasing his wisdom, leadership, and pivotal role in Middle-earth’s history. Correcting this portrayal would align the series more closely with the beloved source material, enriching its narrative depth.
'The Rings of Power' must rectify character flaws in Season 2
For Galadriel's character to feel cohesive in 'The Rings of Power', it's not she who needs to change, but Gil-galad and Elrond. In Tolkien’s lore, both are formidable warriors. Gil-galad, wielding the spear Aeglos and owner of the Rings of Air and Fire, was a key figure in the Last Alliance that defeated Sauron.
Elrond, though a Peredhil, was a respected warrior, entrusted with Vilya by Gil-galad. His heroic actions included rescuing Eregion’s survivors and founding Rivendell. In Season 1, their passive portrayal felt inconsistent with their established characters. Season 2 must refine Gil-galad’s arc, showcasing his warrior spirit and leadership.
He and Elrond need to actively fight against Sauron, aligning with their Lord of the Rings counterparts. This change will not only enhance their characters but also validate Galadriel's vigilance against evil, creating a more cohesive and compelling narrative. Proving Galadriel right and showing unity in their battle will deepen the series' connection to Tolkien's warlike Elves.
