Netflix 'The Irishman': Release date, cast, plot, all you need to know about Martin Scorsese's film

One of the most anticipated films on Netflix this year happens to be directed by Martin Scorsese. 'The Irishman', all set to release in autumn of 2019, will have Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci share screen space in the gangster drama.

This film also reunites the 'Goodfellas' director with Pacino and De Niro. 'The Irishman' is based on the book 'I Heard You Paint Houses' by Charles Brandt. The book is based on real-life labor union official Frank 'The Irishman' Sheeran who reportedly had links to the Bufalino crime family and Jimma Hoffa, a labor union leader.

In the film, Frank Sheeran's character will confess about the role that he played in slaying Hoffa. De Niro will play the role of Sheeran, while Pacino will portray Hoffa. Pesci will play the role of Russell Bufalino and Harvey Keitel will play Angelo Bruno. The film will also have Anna Paquin play the role of Peggy Sheeran. The film is reportedly the most expensive movie in Scorsese's career and is made on a budget of $175 million — a lot of which was spent on visual effects to make the lead actors look 30 years younger at different stages in the film.

Netflix also released an announcement, which features just a dialogue in the background and introduces audiences to the main players. It is also clear that there will be a lot of bullets flying in the film. We hear, "I heard you paint houses" and that is as much as we get to know through the announcement. Yet, the voice of De Niro does fascinate you about the film.

Because of the budget, not many were ready to produce the film and speaking about Netflix coming on board, Scorsese said, "Here you have people taking risks on a picture I just made and it’s a risky film and an interesting experience," at the Marrakech Film Festival according to Screen Daily.

He added, "I think it’s a risk and no one wanted to do it for five or six years. And of course, we’re all getting older." This was in reference to the technology used in the film to make actors look younger.

He also revealed how his stars had limited space for improvisation because of their age and explained, "'The Irishman' has some improvisation in it, but it is very structured. I tried free improvisation on a film once and it was a disaster. But as we are getting older, we have to place our energy when we have it. We are in our 70s and it’s hard to say 'let us all work an extra two hours a day and we’ll get it', so we had to get the actors in their rhythm."

He described the film as being "About two brothers, they have to trust each other and there is a betrayal," adding that he’s been making the same film for 45 years.

Scorsese said that despite his positive experience with Netflix, he’s worried about the state of distribution today. “Everyone can make films today, but no one can see them,” he lamented.

The initial announcement about 'The Irishman' was made in 2014 and it was said that this would follow the release of 'Silence'. After going through production troubles, the film finally got an official release date in autumn 2019. It will also have a limited theater release according to reports
