Netflix's new docuseries, 'The Innocence Files', showcases the exoneration of the wrongfully imprisoned. The series will talk about eight inmates that were wrongly accused of crimes and were later represented by the acclaimed nonprofit organization, Innocence Project, which was founded in the year 1992. Founded by Peter Neufeld and Barry Scheck at Cardozo School of Law, the nonprofit legal organization has used the power of DNA to help exonerate prisoners who were wrongfully convicted.

Release date

The nine-part series will premiere on April 15, 2020.

Plot

Netflix' official synopsis reads, "Through the lens of The Evidence, The Witness and The Prosecution, 'The Innocence Files' shines a powerful light on the untold personal stories behind eight cases of wrongful conviction that the nonprofit organization the Innocence Project and organizations within the Innocence Network have uncovered and worked tirelessly to overturn."

“These stories expose difficult truths about the state of America’s deeply flawed criminal justice system while showing when the innocent are convicted, it is not just one life that is irreparably damaged forever: Families, victims of crime, and trust in the system are also broken in the process,” read a release.

Creators

'The Innocence Files' is executive produced and directed by Academy Award nominee Liz Garbus ('What Happened, Miss Simone?'), Academy Award winner Alex Gibney ('Taxi to the Dark Side'), and Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams. Some episodes are also directed by Academy Award nominee Jed Rothstein, Emmy Award winner Andy Grieve and Sarah Dowland.

Trailer

“I think the best thing that a lawyer can do with their license is get an innocent guy out of prison,” says lawyer Ellen Eggers. “We get flooded with letters from all over the country. They’re human beings who are claiming to be wrongly convicted," says Neufeld.

The true-crime documentary is separated into three parts: The Evidence, The Witness and The Prosecution and tells us eight stories. Watch the powerful trailer below.
