Contains Spoilers for 'The Dead Don't Hurt'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'The Dead Don't Hurt' is releasing in theatres on May 31, 2024, and this emotional love story has an end that will leave the audience with moist eyes.
The film is directed by Viggo Mortensen who also plays the role of Holger Olsen in it. The protagonist of the film however is Vivienne Le Coudy, portrayed brilliantly by Vicky Krieps who survives alone in a town full of aggressive and ruthless men.
The story begins with Vivienne and Olsen falling in love and moving into a corrupt town. They live a happy life until Olsen takes the decision to fight in the American Civil War leaving Vivienne alone to fend for herself. She gets assaulted by a menacing and almost maniacal Weston Jeffries (Solly McLeod). She thinks of leaving but stays put working in a bar to earn for herself when she realizes she is pregnant. What happens to Vivienne? Does Olsen return? Here we explain the end of 'The Dead Don't Hurt'.
Holger Olsen returns from the Civil War
Holger Olsen returns from war and learns that Vivienne has a child called Vincent (Atlas Green). He has a discussion about the identity of the child when Vivienne tells him about Weston Jeffries raping her. He is about to leave and confront Weston but Vivienne tells him about Weston not being in town.
He leaves the place and contemplates the situation for a bit. He returns and accepts Vincent. They begin to live together and start a family. Olsen develops a relationship with Vincent too.
He has a few confrontations with Weston but they both survive those violent confrontations in a lawless town.
Vivienne Le Coudy dies after being diagnosed with Syphilis
Just as Vivienne and Olsen are beginning to get back to living a happy life together, Vivienne falls ill and is diagnosed with Syphilis. The doctor who treats Vivienne also tells Olsen that Vincent might also have the illness later.
Vivienne and Olsen have a final moment together when Olsen regrets leaving her alone and going off to fight in the Civil War. The emotional moment reflects the moments missed by Vivienne and Olsen who are both deeply in love and accept each other but fighting for the supposed greater good takes away their chance of being together. Vivienne justifies Olsen's decision by saying that he needed to.
Holger Olsen kills Weston Jeffries in a brutal face-off
Olsen and Vincent are traveling on their horse when they are confronted by Weston Jeffries who points a gun at them. Olsen offers peace but Jeffries asks Olsen to throw his weapons away.
While he is throwing his dagger away, Olsen throws it to hurt Weston. As Weston recovers from the wound and tries to shoot at them, Olsen hides Vincent. Weston runs out of bullets and Olsen brutally kills him.
Vincent silently witnesses the murder with an expressionless face. The film ends with Olsen and Vincent by the river looking deep into the horizon.
